[4AGE] ignition timing problem -> SOLVED !!
If the timing does not change when you plug/unplug the diagnostic
connector, your engine is not going into diagnostic mode. There is a list of conditions that must be met before the engine will enter diagnostic mode. From memory.... 1. Engine at normal operating temp. 2. All accessories turned off. 3. A/C turned off. 4. Idle at 850-900 rpm. 5. IDL switch in TPS closed. 6. Probably one more I've forgotten yup, battery volts more than 11. If you can't get the engine to go into diagnostic mode, as suggested above, set the timing to 16-17 deg at idle. Cheers... jondee86 |

[4AGE] ignition timing problem -> SOLVED !!
THANK YOU fax0815 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
She's back on the road !!! Yes, the TPS was out of spec It's crazy because I never touched this thing... I explain : I checked the Throttle Position Sensor, the procedure is well desdribed on the Workshop manual. So I checked the resistances listed below using an ohmmeter and feeler blades. 0.35 mm (0.0138") IDL-E2 < 2.3 kOhms -> it means continuity and I haven't got any continuty here !! 0.59 mm (0.0232") IDL-E2 Infinity -> it means no continuity 0 mm (0") VTA-E2 0.2-0.8 kOhms Fully open VTA-E2 3.3-10 kOhms Any condition Vcc-E2 3-7 kOhms I set the TPS to spec (thanks to the workshop manual again), a little tricky to do ALONE I set the ignition timing to 10° with the diag plug jumped -> NO JUMPING TDC this time ! I checked ignition timing without the diag plug jumped -> 16° I tried the 86 on the road about 60km : EVERYTHINGs FINE !!! Thanks again fax0815 I owe you a beer at least |

Exactly. If the IDL switch is not closed, you cannot get the engine to
go into diagnostic mode. Good result Cheers... jondee86 |

A long time ago I had a thread about my 86 here, I continued to work on my car since.
If you are interested it was featured on 7Tune (and also a French magazine), I reported mostly everythings I did on my car for 8 years on my blog, here the links : The little feature on 7Tune: http://www.7tune.com/reader-rides-maxime...achi-roku/ The section about my 86 on my blog (I've got some other cars) : http://eg6maxx.over-blog.com/categorie-11389443.html Thanks :wink: |
