what spring rate?

hey guys another question..lol

i have a 86 coupe and i want to work out what spring rate i wanna run.. im going to have coilovers in the front with tokico shocks and kyb 8 way adjustable shocks in the rear, im not really going out to the track much and doing the dori dori with takumi just mainly driving in the mountains... i have at the monent 8kg and unknown in the rear, i was thinking of running 8kg and 6kg in the rear, but now im worried that they maybe to stiff for my application.. any help??

Hey pumpkinking,

Always a difficult discussion. Both Zax and Robokill here on the board run roughly with your setup on their hachi's (8kg front, 6kg rear). It gives a stiff ride which is good for track/drift, but at the sacrifice of comfort. The cars are definately street drivable but on bad quality roads your teeth will fall out

I myself run 6.2kg front and unknown rear allthough I'm hoping to change that soon. Rear is probably around 2kg and allthough it gives great grip at the rear, there is little balance to be found in my car.
I'm going for a 6.2kg to 4kg setup which should hopefully give me a balanced ride. Stiff enough for normal trackwork, a little more comfort for street driving.

I've heard that a 4 to 4.5kg front, 2 to 3 kg rear setup is considered an ideal compromise between good handling and comfort.

6/4 or 6/5 is what technotoytuning recommends.. I'd go for something like that. 4/3 sounds like it would be comfortable, but wont work to well with much lowering of the car.

my calculated and in lfs simulated setup is next:

for track max 6/4,5
for performance road use max 5/3-3.5,

more stiffness punished you chassis dramaticaly, i cannot imagine to run 8/6 or even 8/8 setup on unstiffened body. and you need big tyres to have traction

the 8/6 setup is not that bad actually... but the rates you posted sound reasonable. I dont think LFS is really anything to go by for simulating real-life setups.
