American Rally 86 UPDATE
Well, its logbooked!

I just need to make 4 more gussets, then brace the A pillar to the half laterals, the B pillar to the main hoop, and possibly a few other spots.

Very good work. Came to Spain with your AE86 and we can be an Corolla TEAM, jejejejejeje. Here we have a lot of tarmac rallyes!!

Here in Spain i must respect FIA's "J" rules annexe. In USA what kind of rules you must respect for build an cage?

Best regards

Hahaha, I'd love to go to spain. I'm really hoping I can study abroad in Europe sometime while I'm in college. Infact, I'm even switching to spanish, as opposed to the german I took in highschool! haha

For a new cage, rally america has you use FIA article 253. However, as CDS steel isnt readily available here, we have to use 1.75x.095 DOM and 1.5x.095 dom for cages. NASA rally sport rules are a modification of FIA article 253 cage regulations, but uses the same DOM sizes. The other thing both sanctioning bodies let you use are FIA homologated cages, IE, a custom cages WRX or EVO or whatever cage. Oh, and I believe you can also design a cage in solidworks or something and send it off to be homologated, should you choose to spend the money, but that way, you potentially get a better cage. (safety, rigidity, weight balanced)

Here's what I did today, with some help of my friend. I taught him how to use my plasma cutter and let him loose on laying out and cutting these little guys.

There just some 18 gauge (I have lots of gusset material left over, haha) "house" shaped pieces, I clean the edges up and then bend them in the brake. I did have to trim the passenger side one a bit to clear a firewall bump, and a stitch weld. Oh, and on the driver's side you have to be careful to make it so you dont weld over the steering column boot hole.

I still need to make the last few gussets for the roll cage, but plasma cutting the round parts owns me... so... it takes time, haha.
