Quaife quick rack
or power steering knuckles ?
I want to speed up the steering a bit and I can't decide the best way to go. This is on a rally car so having extra lock is not a requirement and I don't really want the steering to be too heavy, it would need to be one or the other.... not both The quaife rack gives 2.5 turns and the stock rack is just over 3 turns. The power steering knuckles will still give 3 turns but will it be much quicker than stock ? Thanks, TC An analogue brain in a digital World |

No, because the quickness come from the change in rack/pinion ratio. The geometry is changed with PS arms therefore giving slightly more angle. For more lock there are spacers that screw into your rack such as these from AJPS that add 20 odd mm to the rack width itself.
I use PS arms and the Quaife rack and am pleased with the results. I know of some people that still wanted the extra lock with this combo and opted to have a few extra teeth cut into the rack. RokuSteady : Shakotan - Tsuraichi - Hippari - Onikyan : 神奈川 様式 |

I got the Quaife rack in my car plus the URAS steering rods.
This way I got faster steering plus more lock. I would recommend the Quaife steering rack to everybody who is doing motorsport. Your steering will get faster. It will also be heavier tough. With semi slicks in 195 it is quite heavy in first gear turns or while maneuvering in the pit lane. But I can live with it. If you do have a very small steering wheel this might get exhausting tough. I would rather go for the rack then the knuckles. Knuckles will give more lock and not that much faster response. I got a quaife rack and I really like it. Not only are you getting quicker steering you also replace 25 yo stock rack. I would never go back thats for sure However I am considering getting power steering knuckles too

QSR is heavy when moving very slowly. When moving 5mph or more its cool! 3 lane change on the motorway is just a nudge with the wrist. Feels like a go kart! For faster lock, the QSR is the smarter way to go I believe. knuckles are a quick fix. I ahve a lowered AE86. I fitted RCAs which make a fantastic difference. If I had the money I would definitly buy new outer tie rods to correct steering arm geometry too! http://www.skynet.ie/~eireae86 |
