Greek AE86 restoration/modification (pics)
Hey all! I'm back with pics this time.
You can see the final look of my engine bay. Lambda sensor on the exhaust manifold, repaired radiator, new hoses, polished cam covers (I like them), painted engine bay and new (slightly used) filter. I washed it as soon as I got it and there's a pic right after that. She's a beuty (but maybe it's because I'm finally driving her again after 6 months) ![]() Then there's the wheels. I cleaned off all the yellow paint, so now it's down to bare metal. I used some photoshop on the first wheel to see how my idea looks. What do you guys think? Other ideas where to paint the whole interior black, or leave it as is. You can see that on the top of the stacked rims. Also, these are 2-piece wheels. I undid all the bolts in one but failed to pull the inner part out. I used loads of WD-40 on both sides, but to no avail. I even stomped on it until my foot hurt. Any ideas? Fianally, has anybody painted wheels before? Do I need to use primer? The spray can says the paint is good for metal. Any feedback will be appreciated. |

Primer is designed to stick to metal. Paint is designed to stick to primer. You should look into powder coating your rims |

@Mulisha: I've already asked for powdercoating. The guy told me to divide the wheels first and bring him just the inner parts. Perhaps he knew it would be a full time job doing that.
![]() Also, with powder coating you can only paint all of the wheel. I want the "cross" of the rim to remain metal, just like in the picture above. Thanks for the primer info though! |

Oh, I must have missed that part. If you do decide to devide the rims be careful, they may not go back together because of the extra paint.

Dunno if it's possible with powdercoating, but old Celica GT wheels are twotone also (paint/metal), if we restore it, we paint it all in 1 color. And then 'scrape' of the paint which isn't needed (dunno the right word for it, but i mean putting the wheel on something that rotates and then remove the paint) These kinda wheels i mean: ![]() The spokes should be metal, the round thing between it should be black (but is very worn on this very rare 1.6 GT ![]() "It's all about the heart, the people who focus on parts, turbo's and all that stuff...they're just losers." -Shinji Minowa |

Thanks for the info and the wishes guys, but guess what...
See the passenger's door in the picture above? Looks nice huh? Well I had a slight crash on a CLK last night (ice is very very slippery on my old worn tyres) and now the door and bodywork right behind it need fixing. @nmwisima: now you see why I didn't paint the whole car. Pics soon. PS. I may sound very relaxed, but I'm just barely containing myself. The CLK guy called today to tell me that Mercedes want 1200-1400 euro total for the new bumper, silver lining, new parktronic sensor, paint and labour. And just because of a small crack. I hate Mercedes. |
