AKR's Daily-driver-race-car
(my project as copied from another forum)

My hachi project... this is the third hachi I've ever owned... I love em' and I'm building this one from the ground up to suit my taste. I've posted this up on other forums I go to.. usually there's alot more explanation but since I don't know anyone on here too well yet (not a bad thing) I figured I'd keep it simple for now.

The project:

AE86 Levin Coupe (best AE86 in my opinion they look ganster)

Immediate goal:

-Strip down to bare chassis
-Get rid of all rust
-Sand chassis down to bare metal
-spot weld chassis
-weld in roll cage
-Coat chassis with anti rust paint
-Paint entire car (prime, paint, the usual)(car will be a glossy black)(during this time I will also be widebody'in the car)
-Fabricate (out of metal or fiberglass) a "simple" dash with gauges (for only necessary ****). I'm not putting the old dash back in because I want everything on the car to be simple and "easily accessible")
-Overhaul engine, it's a silver top 20v
-Change out PS rack for NON-PS rack
-Solid tranny and motor mounts
-Polyurethane bushing set
-Freedom ecu w/ new wiring harness

Day 1/ 27 Sep 09

In my defense I did take a nap, eat lunch and chat up a friend.. but it took me most of a day to take out the interior of the car. I was taking my time especially on the dash. I remember one my civic it was just a few bolts but on the hachi it felt like I had to take just about everything apart to get it to come off..

I Can't handle that much bass
[Image: AEU86 AE86 - AKR's Daily-driver-race-car]
That white connector on the back of the gauge cluster and on the dash.. does that use fluids to read speed or something?
[Image: AEU86 AE86 - AKR's Daily-driver-race-car]
Time to get out all that junk underneath the dash...

It's 30,000 yen... I'm thinking of using this instead of the body I have now.. anybody disagree? I think this one looks smokin' clean..

I'm thinking of picking up the hachi next to it too just to drive while I'm doing this project, so I can get used to driving a hachi again and learn with the other one without worrying about beating it up.

Sooo here's a bit of motivation for today.... Day 3 will commence this Sunday and I'll be back in the thick.
[Image: AEU86 AE86 - AKR's Daily-driver-race-car]
Left- Levin couple from Okinawa, will be kept between me, and two friends at the local track where it is 5,000 yen a month to keep it there and you get your own bay/ spot.
Middle- The clean levin coupe that I'll use for my body
Right- The Levin hatchback that I'll be driving for the time being till my project is finished.

The clean coupe was 30,000 man and the hatch back was 150,000. I paid 140,000 for both with free towing :yesss:

I'll get pics of that hatchback tomorrow or the day after.

I'm freaking tired. Don't expect much pics from Sunday, I don't want to bore anybody with what I'll be doing to the other Levin, pretty much the same thing, I'll probably get it to the level which the one I have now is at. So probably just a before and after pic.

Not too many pics because I was redoing alot of things on the second hachi. The only thing I have left now on this body is the rear window and the front and rear member really. Then I can get into the cleaning and sanding.

First I have to make my rotisserie.. I found a write up that I like here. I just have to find a place that sells the supplies I need.
http://www.mts.net/~hpokrant/Restoration...sserie.htm

I found a link that has hachi body, diagnostics, wiring, and 20v service manuals and printed them all up and put them in sleeves and in binders. I'll take pics and post up those links later.

I found out that there ARE amateur grip/ circuit events that I can enter so between now and when I'm done with the body it'll be a toss up to if I want to make it touge or circuit "spec'd".
I won't be able to work on the car this weekend so I won't know when "day 6" will be. Probably next weekend. I made a flea bargain with the wife. I also have to visit the in-laws for a couple of weeks in Dec but I requested a month so I'll have 2 straight weeks I'll be able to throw at this on the tail end of that.

Day 3/ 18 OCT 09 "The re-doing"

found this in the ashtray... someone was collecting... sweet.....it was like 4000 yen...
[Image: AEU86 AE86 - AKR's Daily-driver-race-car]
Day 4/ 21 OCT 09
Just alot of redoing to get to where I was with the previous hachi, just some wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am pics.

Day 5/ 22 OCT 09
Window removal.... ghetto style~
[Image: AEU86 AE86 - AKR's Daily-driver-race-car]
cut my hood release cable and tied it to two wrenches....

Took some time after work today a couple of hours. I'm limit to working on this a couple of hours during one day of the week and for a full 8 hours one weekend. It's all the wife will let me =( but I have another Levin, a hatchback that I'm getting registered (i'll take pics later this week) so I can drive it and get my mind off of this project and how long it takes while I'm working on it. That hatchback is just a beater so I can get use to driving a hachi again and to drive it without fear of damaging it. So having said that here's:

Day 5.5/ 26 OCT 09

Spent a couple of hours after work.. I took out the rear window today (VERY EASY AND FAST COMPARED TO THE FRONT), just popped out the weather strip and poof rear window..haha.. and I stripped the back of the car. Next time on day 6 I will take off the front and rear member with hubs, suspension, etc connected. And start sanding.. after I build my rotisserie.. although I still need to find the parts.

Try to cut the glass with metal string from somthing like trottle cable - and you will not brake the glass next time Smile
