SR86 as a drift car
Hello again.
You might wonder, why the radiator and the intercooler are located so far forward in the car. Since Í wanted to use an S14 radiator, i needed to set the mounting points deeper, since the radiator is higher. This was not possible at the OEM location, cause to interference with the front suspension brackets. So i located it in the front of the car and was able to use the S14 radiator hoses. Th intercooler was original designed for an S14. I think, that the short piping will give some response. Luckily the location of it went out so nice, that I only needed to lengthen on pipe. The engine mounts and transmission mounts are bought from an amercian shop and the quality was absolutely okay. unfortunately the transmission mount did not fit perfectly for the 6 speed transmission, since it was designed for the 5 speed transmission. I just flipped it and made some supporting plates to use all mounting holes. I also had to cut out the transmission tunnel a bit, since the 6 speed is a bit wider than the 5 speed. The transmission is a HPI cross speed 6 speed tranny. torque capacity is around 500Nm, so more than enough for the little AE. Engine is 2.2 litre black top Sr20 with tomei components with an HKS GT-RS turbine. Rear axle is a weirperfomance upgraded 2 way diff kit with 4.7 ratio. weir said, that the weakest parts is the pinion gear, So torque has to be limited to about 420Nm. I tried to get an 8.8 VAC rear axle, but they needed 2 month only to tell me the shipping costs, so this is no company I like to buy from. I tried the search function,( maybe not well enough), so I have a question. I am running 3cm wider frontwings and 4cm wider rear panels and have 14x8 offset 0 wheels with tyres from 195 to 215( Toyo R88 Do you think, there will be enough clerance for those combination? |

Hi mate,
I like the project very much. I have 3 proposals for you 1. 5speed gearbox is much better then 6speed from S15. Even I managed to kill one S14 gbox in my SR86 2. I think your rear diff might blow when you read number 3., so upgrade it sooner the better 3. 14" is way to small for the power you are going to. I started on 195/50/15 and it's a joke for 320HP SR86. I recommend 16x9 wheels with 205/55/16 (cheap all around tires) or 225/50/16 tires (bmw/merc common size) If you need any more tips for building SR86, PM me or we can have a coffe. I am in Wien on 16.8.2011. Regards, ZaX Drifting - best fun you can have in your car with your pants on! |

Again some pics.
The handbrake may look abit strange, but for me it has got the perfect height and there is no interference with the shifter |

The headlights are going to nowhere . Since it is a trailer car (Here in austria it is just impossible to get such a car registred), it doesn´t need them, so I used the space for the oil-coolers. If I ever will drive in the evening, I will put some of these aditional rally light on the front bumper
