Broken bolts - Water pump

Hello there! Today is a sad day for me..... A simple task was complicated by a screw that has to be dealt in a special way....

My water pump was leaking since i bought the car, had been leaking for years i bet, now that i can see the screws.... Broke two of them on the pump, and one that tightens the water pump to the engine...... The others got out pretty easily, and are in bad condition....

What should i do now to remove the broken screw in the engine? Damn.... the water pump has never been changed, only had repair kits, the bolts are in such a bad way that you can broke them with your fingers...........

I'm a bit lost now.... Need some advice! (Maybe to take the block to someone that knows what it's doing... maybe?)

Drill out the broken screw step by step. This is not a big deal. Be sure to start drilling right in the middle of the broken screw that is sticking to the block. Then rework the thread in the block.

If the screw is sticking out a couple of centimeters - spray some WD 40 or something similar to the thread and wait a good time. Then grab it with grip pliers and turn it out - should work. Also using heat always helps...

If they are if they are hovering (pokeing), like said xrgeorg, drilling a line bundle and and use a screwdriver or weld a nut

But if they are heavily involved in the block, better take it to a turner man

I also use these special tools sometimes. It´s called "Schraubenausdreher". They have left-hand thread and get screwed into the drilled bolt - so they tighten while the bolt get´s loose.

Thank you for the replies! My problem atm is to work with this screw, i bet that its all rust...... And if it breaks too much inside the block i'm in trouble and i'll probably have to take the block out and take it to a turner....

If that happens, oh well.... welcome new engine!

I hope you´re not serious...
It´s just a bolt no reason to worry.
Try plieres and heat gun, if that fails a welded on nut always helps.
If welding doesnt help you usually end up with drilling out the screw but it should be your last resort.

Maybe take a pic, we might give you better advice.

change the water pump housing or drill a hole and use a screw extractor


must start with a small drill bit and work your way up to the biggest size without messing up your threads

and use all new bolts when reinstalling with just a bit of antiseize lubricant

Spent already 200€ in bolts and new parts.......

This water pump is the original.... can you believe it? It had only taken repair kits.......... Previous owners should get spanked...!

The state of the bolts is horrible..... in general!

nothing wrong with the original pump if it would have been maintained properly.
as mentioned try all above... worst case you'll need to have it helicoiled.
