Final drive calculation.
As you posted yourself, the Altezza had a 4.1 originaly - though it's better insulated.
Like I said in my opinion find out if you could fit a taller 6th gear (like the one in the S15 box) - that would change your cruising speed without imparing any of the torque in the fun gears. AE86 ex-daily |

Final drive calculation.
The problem is that we don't have s15's over here, so getting parts is a problem.
And then I probably have a large gap between the fifth and sixth gear. Lennert (robokill) and I looked at the different final drive solutions on your site and we came to the conclusion that the 3.58 crown and pinion idea looks pretty good for my situation. But where to get them, and wil they fit the original axle? |

Final drive calculation.
the gap wouldn't be too bad - 6th you'll need mostly on the motorway only anyway (maybe in Spa). I assume you'd be able to order just 6th gear from Nissan... or if you are lucky get one cheap from someone who destroyed 3rd in UK and is rebuilding the box anyway
you can enter 0.767 in the link I posted, that's the S15 6th. But as I said I'm not entierly sure if it's possible despite both being Aisin J160/A6Z) boxes PS: I would love to fit a 2nd gen S2000 gearbox - but it would be a nightmare to accomplish and Quaife are more expensive than my whole car. And are there any 3.58 crown and pinion sets anyway for rear axle? Can't find any while googling. |

Final drive calculation.
like the A6Z/J160 part of the bellhousing covers the actual gears and due to the design of the shifter linkage the transmission tunnel would need a fair amount of changing which I'm not willing to do - for the same reason I'll hopefully go through the daunting process of seamwelding my chassis instead of a cage... I just can get myself to hack up this chassis - it's in too good of a state.
Regarding the final drive I don't know - 3.9 is the tallest I know off. Maybe Dan got some insights on that. Just one last time, I would strongly suggest to look into switching a taller 6th gear - in my opinion you'd be better of that way than with an extremly tall final gear. Leen might know if it's possible. AE86 ex-daily |

Final drive calculation.
Short semi of topic question
Would a rally engine be better with a 4.78 r&p with the 6 speed gearbox? Dont care for highway driving etc |

Final drive calculation.
For hillclimb car I would go 5.375. @8000rpm you will get close to 200km/h which is more than enough. Rally cars usually have similar top speed.
So, 4.778 is kind of long/slow for a rally car, use shorter final drive if possible. |

Final drive calculation.
So it's confirmed the S15 6th gear fits on the A6Z from the Beams engine. See the recent thread regarding the ford type 9 gearbox
