Yeah but they are all no ae86s!

Still if we ignore the AE86s, one if the first rotary engines, the DKM, did over 25000 rpm. I remember someone writing on a forum that he talked to one of the original engineers working together with dr Wankel and having the engine up to 100000rpm!

It was never build into a car though because maintenance on this engine was impossible, you have to take the engine appart if you wanted to change the sparkplugs! Still the design is far superiour to the rotary engines that ended up in the NSU and later on into the Mazda's.
