Is drifting really faster?

Watching the Initial D, people can learn a lot about fast driving. But reading the Internet, all the sites I've visited, explaining technics about the fast driving are confirming the opinion - slide/drift is loose of time. So drift should be avoided, to keep the times fast.

Takumi on the other side is showing acceleration drift, braking drift... the whole movie is about hard drifting.

So where is the truth?

the truth is,its faster. yes initial d is impossible but for a road with low quality(grip) and narrow hairpins,its faster

Generally speaking drifting is slower...but on some tight corners, and on loose surfaces (like in rally), it can help keep the speed up.
Initial D is just a cartoon, and professional drifting is a style contest, nothing to do with taking the fastest way through a turn anymore.

In some cases drifting can be faster, but in most cases it makes no sense to drift through a corner while driving for speed.

In the last episode (EP 17) of 4th stage takumi uses a drift to lose speed instead of breaking early. In a normal race it would ask too much for your tires, but for a single race you can waste your tires since you only have one lap.

i read this somewhere last time! yes that means drifting at 10-15 degrees.. lol

When you do more performance driving you'll find out soon enough what kind of slip angle works best. In my short experience I can say that you rarely get much slip on fast racing tracks in the long corners. On tight slalom tracks however the car feels best when you have a tiny bit of oversteer, you can feel it pretty well in the car, but you hardly notice it while looking at the car from the outside. That would be your 5% slip i think.

I could see on the slalom that our drifting forum members were going faster through a couple of hairpins doing full out drifts than me and mux driving grip through the same corners. On the wider stuff however it is completely pointless.
