Diff overhaul
I rebuilt my diff unit a while ago, which was fairly straight forward to do, but what wasnt very easy was setting the backlash and pre-load etc! Took hours and hours to get it right!

Diff overhaul
Do a search Kas, there is a lot of information on the procedure on the internet. http://www.ringpinion.com has a nice document describing what you need to do, and the toyota manual also contains all the info you need. (It's only a bit difficult to read if you dont know what their talking about.).
Basically there are 3 adjustments you need to do.. the first one is pinion depth. You adjust this with washers behind the pinion, and check if it's correct by installing the diff and checking the contact pattern. Then there is the pinion bearing preload. This is adjusted by how tight you tighten the pinion nut. You can adjust it by torque-ing the nut to a specified amount and then check how much torque is needed with an inch-pound (or cm-Nm) torquewrench (also known as torque-meter). The backlash is the amount of play between the pinion and ring gear. This is adjusted with the rings on the side. You need a micrometer to check how much movement there is between the gears. The side bearings of the diff also need to be set to a certain preload, which is also done using the micrometer...it's all in the manual. FABRICA MI DIEM, PVNC! |
