T50 gearboxes compared
Today, while trying to tidy up a big shed, to get some space to move some stuff around, throw some stuff away etc. etc. we found 6 T50 gearboxes.

We spent about 1,5 hour comparing all the boxes.
So i made some pics to clear up some things.

At first for side shots of the gearboxes:

Old Celica, probably TA23.
2T bellhouse and a tail with the shifter bolted on in the middle of the tailpiece.

AE86.
4A bellhouse, and a tail with the shifter at the end of the tail with a circlip.

Celica AA63 GTS.
4A bellhouse, and a tail with the shifter at the end of the tail with a circlip.

Probably TE71.
2T bellhouse and a tail with the shifter at the end of the tail with a circlip.
This is an old bellhouse with an 80's style tailpiece, so that's why i think about TE71.

A pic from the bellhouses.
from left to right: AE86, TA23, AA63 and TE71)

The difference in length of the T50 tailpieces:
zero to none i guess Wink

Also the position of the gearbox supports are exactly the same
[Image: AEU86 AE86 - T50 gearboxes compared]

So the only real difference in the tailpieces is the place where the shifter comes out of the box. It should be possible to use both types on any car, if the splines on the output shaft would be the same. Only need to cut a hole in the floor then Smile
The place where the shift nob is, is around the same place at both boxes, because the old box has it's shifter angled towards the rear.

We compared the boxes itself to, but there weren't any real differences (otherwise it wouldn't be a T50 for sure Big Grin).
Only some plugs changed/went to another place on the box.

So basicly, you can buy any T50 gearbox (saw one go for 35 euro's on ebay lately Big Grin) and swap you own bellhouse and tailpiece if neccesary (spelling?).

So that was a lesson from Dr. Doc Hurray!
See if we can pull some more interesting bits out of the 100m^2 shed in the upcoming weeks Big Grin

Nice write-up doc..There should be in total 3 types of t-50 boxes..as long as I remember correctly from the writeup over @ toyota3TC.

How does the 2T T50 box compare to the K-40/50 box for the same engine? Would it be possible to just use a 2T-T50 tranny Xmember to align things?

That would be the 2 different extension housings I guess. so maybe the output shaft is different...but that isnt too difficult o swap over.

yeah, afaik the TA22 box is different then the TA23 box, but we couldn't find a box which is for shure a TA22 box, so we got to find one somewhere (he knows he got one, but not in this shed Big Grin)

Dunno about the K40/50, i haven't got a spare one (yet Tongue)

There are 2 types.

We did not count them, but we tried a cutted axle on the boxes.
Indeed, we had 2 different types. The newer extension housings seemed to be a little thicker (and having more teeth).
That's something for the next time, it was getting dark pretty fast.

Hello, sorry to say, but the bellhousings are not interchangeable. The front bearings of a T-series engine g/box are different than of a A-series g/box. Extensionhousings are interchangeable though, but you have to replace the shift fork shafts too (T-series shafts are longer, A-series have short shafts with an additional linkage system)
Output shafts have the same diameter, only the number of splines are different.

I know this is true for a TA22 g/box, don't know about differences between TA22 and TA23 boxes.

Sorry for this first posts, will introduce myself in the New Members area in a while. I'm planning to fit a 4AGE in a TA22, but i don't want to cutout the shifterfork hole in the floor and change the center console. So i'm going to use the TA22 extension housing on the AE86 g/box.

If my memory serves me correctly, the K-series transmissions have the bellhousing integral to the transmission itself so it's not interchangeable. The only photo I found is this rather bad one from the bottom of my KE70;
