AE86 Axle trouble.
hey guys, im new to the forum, but using my AE86 for about 10 years for blood delivery, and i gotta tell ya, this car is so cozy and helpful doing the job, i never changed anything in the car other than the brakes, routers and calibers. But recently, The entire axle is broken, and some friends are telling me to change it, others tell me to sell the car. Can you guys give me an estimation of how much this peice cost?, do you think its worth to change it?.

what do you men the entire axle is broken??! Did the halfshafts break? That would be highly unlikely. Or did the differential break? That would be more likely.. Have you been changing the differential oil regularly?

Honestly if you like the car that much, I would start calling local junkyards and salvage yards to see if they have any entire rear ends for sale. If you get lucky you can find one for under $200USD then you can just swap the entire rear end and keep your car working. Not only that, but you can keep the old rear end, pull it apart and replace what's broken so you have a spare. That's what I did at least.

The mechanic said its the control arm, which is part of the rear axle. By the way, the car is still driveable, but every time i make gear switch from first to second and to third, i always hear this cracking noise in the rear end of the car, but this noise is not present when i switch to fourth and fifth gear. I dunno if you guys think its other parts, please reply.

Control arm? You wanted to sell your car over a broken control arm? cmooon that will cost you 10$.. you can probbaly get a new one for 20$.. or just weld the broken piece.. or even make one yourself..
But according to your description, its not a control arm i think.. you probably have some diff problems.. Take a look under your car you should see 4 logitudal links (control arms) holding the rear axle, and behind the axle a lateral control arm. if any of theese is broken, fixing should be easy. |
