4A-GE engines? what a mess!
Ok her is my problem. ME! I have this crazy spinning sensation everytime I think of 4A-G engines...... It might be the lack of sleep and the classical beer syndrome. But I think I need to clear some things up.
The engine that came stock with the AE86 is what people refer to ass the 16v blue top small port engine, right? Also you talk about ribs, what ever that is ![]() Then we come to the AE92 engines, here we have the first generation(88-89) blue top small port engine(with how many ribs???) , ok? am I on the right track? Then the next generation AE92 engine(90-91) wich is a red\blacktop(?!) bigport? here I have no idea what I'm talking about... Then the AE101 20v (92-95) silvertop big port? then the next generation 20v AE111 blacktop bigport.... right...? or? Ok I will describe my questions in some clearer form. 1. what is with the ribs? what do yuo mean by ribs and what engine has what ribs? 2.the colord tops is from the writing on the camcovers, right? what about the AE92 red/blacktop then( wich I saw used on this forum). And what engines have what colors...? 3. Bigport/small port. This is refering to the intake or what? and what engines have small or big? 4. wtf is wrong with me? I'm going to go eat somthing, then I'll check back here. Hope for some clearifying answers ![]() greetings from a very confused and tired norwegian.......... Please help me ![]() |

4A-GE engines? what a mess!
Ok lets start from the top
Standard AE86 (GT/APEX/GTS) where sold with a Bluetop 4A-GE Bigport engine with 40mm crank and 18mm piston pins the block has 3 ribs Then second blocks from 87-90 are 3 rib smallport blocks actually already (redtops) but not yet the full thing you want for tuning then we have the best of the bill late 90 to 91 is a redtop 7 rib smallport map sensored 42mm crank 20mm piston pin 4A-GE 92 AE101 4A-GE Silvertop not sure about crank lower block is similiar to the 7rib last version (its the same almost) and the head is difrent 5 valves only AFM 97 AE111 4A-GE Blacktop Map sensored little boosted up to his older brother but not that difrent but difrent size pistons pins etc Or the ribs are the lowerblock ribs they are vertical lines along the block it is for strenghting you can see it as a strap around a piece of cheese :-) more ribs stronger block simple Matter of valve covers peepz paint those so doesn't say a thing big port refers to the head of the engine big port is a full round circle and a smallport is euhm how do you say it OVAL ???? its like an egg but then symetric :-) Cars: "99 Lexus IS200 "86 AE86 Kouki Panda Levin GT-Apex (restore project) "84 AE86 Zenki Blue Levin (project racer) Motorcycles: "02 Yamaha R1 "02 Honda Hornet S "08 BMW R1200GS |

"big port refers to the head of the engine big port is a full round circle and a smallport is euhm how do you say it OVAL ???? its like an egg but then symetric "
The small and the big ports are oval. The difference in size is ~1/3. About 20V engines - all of them are 42/20mm (except some special pistons, pins and rods for racing - 42/19mm). About 3 and 7 ribs - in fact we have 5 and 7 ribs (if we count ALL vertical ribs - including "edges" of block). |

No, robokill :-)
The sad true is that there in Bulgaria we can find only AE92 non-tvis 4AGE powered Corollas. There is no any other way to obtain 7-rib block and 42mm crank - there is no supercharged 4AGZE's, there is no 20V engines... So I just was so curious about non-tvis 4AGE's - they are my only hope. |

Gheghe...always nice threads for guys new to the whole 4ag scene.
There are tons of variations, you get the idea of it after a while on forums. I already noticed some mistakes, for instance the 87-90 ae92 4age is a bigport 3-rib TVIS engine with 40mm crank and 20mm wrist pin. Truth is, there are many variations and weird combo's among the ae92 engine range, so it's hard to make a simple list... FABRICA MI DIEM, PVNC! |
