Hiya Mark, nice to have another old scool representative on board!
TACN can indeed be a weird and dedicated bunch sometimes, but everyone chooses their own way of practicing their automotive hobby. You'll always have differences of opinion. I look at it this way. If we didn't pick them up and use them as hobby cars, most AE86 and older corolla's would have ended up on the scrap heap. The old toyota fanbase is just to small to save all of them. So in the end its a good thing, whether they'll admit too that reamains to be seen. Changin the engine in your corolla is a difficult call. Basically, you could swap in any engine that has a RWD tranny, not just the toy engines. A 4Ag can be expensive these days, certainly with al the RWD goodies. 2TG and RG engines seem to be more common on the second hand market: there is less of them available, but the market is nonexistant, so they stay for sale. Spare parts is difficult though. Take a look at other cars too though, the optimal solution (for you) could very well be a engine from a totally different car. For example the mazda miata engine is far preferable to the 4AG if you want to boost. (250RWHP on stock block) and has LOTS of cheap turbokits available (1000$ greddy). Blocks are common too as they came in the 323, ford escort, some kia's etc etc. Also the 200SX engine might be an option etc etc. A cheap 2tg has a lot going for it though. Simple carb setup that provides excellent character. Same horsepower as the 4AG, but less electronics to fiddle with etc etc. Should bolt in fairly simply.
