Mark: lowering means coilovers...end of story. At least when you want it really low. Buying a set of coiloverperches and springs is probably not that more expensive then just a set of lowering springs. Also..when you don't lower the car that much, than switching to coilovers isn't any more difficult than switching springs.
I think you are referring to shortening the housings as too big a project. Well when you want to lower the car a significant amount, its the only option remaining. Just using the lower springs will end up with car bouncing off the bumpstops all the time and offer poor ride quality. Rally race etc has nothing to do with it. Also, hitting the bumpstops can potentially be very dangerous as the car changes character dramatically. In the end U end up having to make a choice between either a slightly lowered car and normal lowering springs (why bother changing to AE86?) or a lowered ride and shortened coilovers (makes sense to use AE86 stuff because of cost).
