I also have sometimes gas smell inside my AE86, i guess it's due to two holes on the trunk floor (maybe the car was GPL some time ago) and the smell goes in by those, although they are sealed!
About the smoke... i got no smoke.... and my oil consumption is sometimes big... depends on the type of driving i'm taking.... The white smoke i get sometimes it's water on the muffler caused by night's humidities.... Trying the Castrol 10W-40 for now and see if it goes well!
