Another danish restoration

So, the next task was the rear parcel tray. I bought a used one with a mission to restore it my way.

The one I got had the two classic 6x9 speaker holes in it. Also it was a bid rugged around the edges. So to make it more stiff I decided to go with a layer of fibre glass.

Here is what I did.


The 30 years old parcel tray with holes in it.



I pulled the old cloth of and torched the rest with a heat gun. Finally I took a metal brush a removed the last of the old black cloth.



I covered the parcel tray in a layer of fibre glass. I had made templates for the holes to avoid it to sink in. Once dried I flipped it over and put a bit of polyester in the old holes. Flipped it again at grinded the small bumbs down to get an even surface.



Then I trimmed the edges and glued a new piece of felt to the tray using spray glue. Flipped it over and did the back as well. I bought 1mm dark brown felt from eBay UK.



Put it back in the car, and it looks really good. The picture I have taken doesn't do it any justice.


So now I have a parcel tray that fits with the rest of the interior and it is not flimsy at all like before. It is quite time consuming. You literally have to wait for glue to dry, but it is well worth the effort :-)
