I'm afraid it's not really possible to time it properly without the backing plate installed. They should indeed not be exactly at the top, but you cant say one tooth this or that way because they both line up differently (not the same angle for both cams). You could try finding a picture of the camgears at TDC, but it would still be possible to mess up.
Just find yourself a backing plate, it's not that difficult to find 4age stuff around the netherlands. Personally I think it's a bit silly to leave the covers off, exposing the timing belt to road debris.. FABRICA MI DIEM, PVNC! |
