I think that it is a little bit more involved then that. Having the axle of the car doesn't help that much, it might even be easier to get the driveshafts off with the axle still on the car..easier to apply power.
Its a job that, to do it well, needs some tools that not everyone has lying around. Screw it up and kiss your R&P goodbye. Take a look in the factory manual, its all in there. If you happen to find a 2 way LSD already installed into the diff bell with the ring and pinion adjusted and ready to go...then its a straight and easy bolt in affair.
