Removing Power Steering from AE86, Need Help, Thanks!!!
Hey everyone!!!
Iam pretty new to this forum, I got a little problem, the idler bearing seized today. Ripped the PS belt, and I was wondering whats the best and the safest way, make my AE86 with no PS at all. WTF are the two lines going to the EFI body (vaccum lines) from the PS pump??? When I started the car with no PS belt the RPM were going up and down from 1500 to 2000 (as far as I recall). Once the engine warmed up everything was fine. Would the RPM hunting be caused by those two vaccum lines??? I dont care much for creature comforts, I'd rather get rid of it all together if its ok. How do I go about blocking those two lines to the EFI body...??? Thank you very much for all the help!!!! |

yo tiger download the chassis manual and check it. It could be that you need to adjust cold start idle rpm

I think you need to loop the hydraulic lines on the powersteering, that will allow fluid to transfer from one side to the other. Otherwise find an aw11 MR2 at a scrapheap, and grab a non-ps steering rack of of it.. the racks are the same as the ae86 ones.
You will need some brackets to make the non-ps rack fit the ps crossmember though.. T3 sells them, or you can make your own. FABRICA MI DIEM, PVNC! |

Yeah, robokill I dunno why that did not occur to me earlier. Cuz when I start the car cold the rpms go to 2k. Then drop too fast and the engine stalls. I cant keep it alive with the gas pedal. I will check the manual on the RPM cold start setting. Thans a lot on that idea.
Ivan141, hmmm... This is going to be a little bit more complex then I have anticipated. If I have to get those extra parts... Finding an MR2 is a little bit difficult here, especially with an engine in it.. Come to think of it I know I of MR2 in the parking lot. LOL I think, I will try to keep it on for now till I find an idler pulley. Thats what really making get rid of PS. I couldn't find an GTS just SR5 at the yard. So no pulleys. You wont belive how much a dealer wants for a idler pulley here. $270 CDN, and its got to come from Japan. I'll see what I can do with the rpm, and hold of on the removal... Thank you very much guys!!!! |

Dont loop the lines on the throttlebody back to eachother, get some 1/4'' (whatever metric size taht is... I'm a typical American... hahaha) vacuum caps to put over those vacuum ports.
IF you looped them, then that is the cause of your unstable idle problem "Sometimes giving up isn't the answer we're looking for, but its the only answer we have" |
