Air Cleaner Assembly
I have a question about the Air Cleaner Assy. Picture of a Japanese model (4AGEU w/ catalytic converter) is below.

The air box for models without catalytic converter are different, from what I have been told. But how different are they. Are they interchangeable? Can a non-cat version be converted into an air box for an 4AGEU?

Best regards,
Mehmet

The key point is what system you have to measure the amount of air going into the engine: MAF or MAP.

Without an adapter you wont be able to switch the intake. One intake was designed for each of the two systems.

The MAF sensor is part of the lid of it's corresponding airbox.

The MAP sensor connects to the intake manifold so you could pretty much fit anything (there are a few things T-ing off the pipe but that would be an easy fix).

This is all 16V specific - the 20Vs are different but I don't know enough about them.

Here is how the intake assembly fits on a MAP sensored non-cat AE86..

This car did not have the intake resonator shown in your diagram.

Thank you.

I was told, that the deciding factor was the cat. My car has a vacuum sensor on the firewall. So it must be mapped, which also checks with the info online (J, AUS, NZ models being MAP). Are the US and Euro models AFM?

Mehmet

So it seems that the USDM got AFM/EGR and MAF. Japanese market got
the style shown higher up in this thread with MAP and CAT and the
Eropean market got some combination based on each countries regulations.
The CAT is a standalone item on an AE86 so not directly linked to the air
intake or load sensing. But AFM, EGR and CAT are often found together in
those markets with more stringent pollution standards. That's all I got Smile

I understand. Thanks. Smile

It is not easy to see a stock AE86 engine bay and I couldn't recall, that I ever saw a stock airbox with an AFM or MAF before. The the technical diagrams don't always do real pictures justice.

Geers,
Mehmet

In principle all AE86s are MAP, except for the ones that were sold in the US and Switzerland to meet their stricter pollution standards.
So also the German ones that included the catalytic converter and ran on unleaded.

That is good news for me. A huge weight lifted from my shoulders. That would make searching for a box in Germany much easier then. Thank you.
