Can't fire up. Buzzing from the relay, lamps blinkin- HELP

These cars are known to have problems with the "circuit opening relay" which provides power to the fuel pump, based on inputs from the air flow meter and the ECU, so there are about five or six possible ways that connections to that relay can fail. The fuel pump test connector bypasses some of them to power the relay directly. This is a relay hidden up behind the glove box, and there have been many posts on club4ag.com about the relay buzzing and needing to be changed, etc. (Don't go looking there now, club4ag is offline possibly for a few weeks.)

If a relay is buzzing it only does that for one of two reasons, it is not getting enough power to hold the contact, or the relay coil itself has burned out (rare). With the circuit opening relay, you'd never be able to check out why it was buzzing without the schematic to trace out all the leads to both coils in it.

The igniters, spark plug wires, coils, distributor, all have no direct connection to that relay.

Again, that's got nothing to do with the AE86. *ANY* 20+ year old used car is going to be a very old used car. The AE86 is in fact a simple, dependable, durable car that got outstanding reviews for mechanical reliability when it was new, equal to or better than anything else on the road at that time.
The AE86 will be a simple car to maintain--compared to more complicated cars--and a reliable car, compared to the many other cars (Renault, Peugot, VW, Audi, Chevy<G&gt that were available from that time period.

The bottom line comes back to all of that not really mattering at all. Anyone who buys an old used car, must expect problems. When the car started in life as a cheap car, a beginner's car, or even worse a cheap beginners sports car that was just begging to be abused by cheap folks who couldn't afford maintenance and didn't know how to do it, the potential for abuse is certainly worse too.<G> On the other hand, in the US Corolla owners tended ot be frugal folks who wanted to keep their cars in good shape for long-term ownership, so the cars were often maintained as well as anything else. And the abusers who wanted to buy sports cars, bought real sports cars here. In 1985 no one knew what a Corolla GTS was here--not even the dealers.

Bottom line? AE86 has nothing to do with it, kids who don't know any better think that because they saw "SuperCar" in a comic book, they're going to buy one in mint condition. If you want problems...The 1968 289 Mustang that I got in 1973 had far more problems, far worse problems, than most 20 year old Corollas will have today. There's a reason we used to say "FORD means Found On Road Dead". Even if they were fun.<G>

There shouldn't be. The ECU should be screwed/bolted to the body and effectively "at" ground.

I didn't mean ECU casing and/or screws to the body... read carefully.

ECU ground, and ECU sensor ground, pins E01, E02, E, E1, E2...

This is getting all a bit tangled up in here, so I'll just post 1 more time about the oldcar maintenance stuff and after that, I hope mrqud will not have given up hope so we an back to helping him.

I havent said that the ae86 was difficult to maintain (apart from the 3rd member that is), but that it is expensive to maintain.
There are plenty of old german cars around on our roads here, and lets face it, they are easier to maintain (parts availability-wise that is) and cheaper too, since you actually stand a chance of finding used parts.
Around here, if 1 ae86 pops up at a wrecking yard in holland in 2 years time, its considered to be a lot (and I mean 1 car poppuing up somewhere in holland, not in a specific wreckingyard). Toyota parts are renowned for their hefty pricing, although some of it can be helped by buying aftermarket stuff.
And dont even start about the costs you encounter when you wreck the 3rd member (which lots of guys do because of their drifting aspirations).

Ah, the PARTS. My misunderstanding. Yes, similar in the US. Corolla parts are common but if you say "GTS" the story changes. In '95 before the internet was big I needed to locate parts to repair theft losses. It took three weeks to locate one set of wheels for my car, and that was with using all the toll-free numbers and teletype connections to junkyards across the US. From the US east coast the first set fo wheels turned up outside of Seattle, 2500+ miles away, three weeks later.

The yard apologized and said "we don't get many wheels for those cars, the kids keep crashing them and ruining the wheels."

But in the last ten years, with junkyads on the internet it has actually become much easier to get parts here. Not easy <G> just easier. And of course not cheap if they are too big to fit in a simple box.

thanx guys... back to the subject then...

I have 2 circut open relays... with both of them it is the same story....

Till now I had a problem with only the turn signal module... a wire in it loosed it self... welded it back, it works like a song...
So, my belief in relays dieing on a Toyota is kinda gone... i believe that the first thing to die in the electric circut is the fuse, and week ground conection...

Althou, I will check them all...

As the selling part is concerned- Zax will probably put a picture from wich you will get it... Had a birthday suprise party... They tricked me in it...
I believe that I will stick with that AE bastard at least as much to get it's hart out one more time and properly burn a set of back tires... (I need a new clutch set before and get that junk fire again...)
