Electric Power Steering Pump
Hi Guys,

I know this question may have been thrown about before, but I was wondering if someone could tell me what would be the best/easiest electric power steering replacement for the standard pump on the AE86?

I'm currently running an Omex setup with a custom bracket for a Crank Angle Sensor to allow me to run power steering. The problem I face is that this bracket is long enough to flex and the toothed wheel from the crank seems to eat away at the sensor when on bumpy roads, as a result I'm replacing sensors regularly and have decided to opt for a shorter bracket by using a standard non power steering crank pulley, thus cutting the belt driven pump out of the equation.

The only option I have is to ditch the power steering pump (which would allow more room for an oil cooler and easier access to the oil filter) and switch to an electric pump. I've looked at the Saxo/Peugeot pump as an option and have been informed this can run up to 50 amps under load, would this be cause for concern? I'm aware some people may suggest going down a whole new rack, but this isn't an option I'm too bothered by as I'm happy with the standard power steering setup for response and just want a quick option to carry out with minimal work.

Thanks in advance

***Also, if you're a Power Steering hater, please keep your "go to the gym" opinions to yourself, this is a point to point daily driver/track car and having ran PAS and non PAS, I know the differences ***

I'm a power steering convert myself Thumbs up!
Most of the Ford Escort guys go with the Vauxhall Corsa power steering
column and it is probably the best option but a lot of work.
My thought are that it may be easier to beef up the sensor bracket a bit, I just know you did'nt want to hear that !

The Peugeot / Citroen pump is an electric fluid pump then ?

Jez,

I know I'm probably asking a stupid question, but is there no way to beef up the crank sensor bracket?

Got to be easier than converting to electric power steering.

If you want to do this, you may do well speak to MCNSport as the D-Mac car has electric power steering and the details of it are on DW.

PS: Are you coming to JAE?

The suggested option by RAW Engineering to beef up the bracket is to weld diagonal struts to the sump, which is even more effort as the margin for error on the CAS positioning is extremely minimal. I mean, so much as an extremely thin washer to bring it further away from the trigger wheel prevents the engine from starting. Ordering up RAW's specified bracket that they have had no issues with seems like a more ideal option instead of fart arsing around trying to weld bits here and there. As I mentioned it also clears room for Oil Cooler lines at a later stage as I may look to strap a supercharger to the engine somewhere down the line...If I haven't sold the car first.

So, this is the pump I've considered. They can be had for around the £40 mark and I can mount it where the coil igniter would usually go for the Dizzy, as I'm no longer using that mounting bracket since running Coilpack.

As for JAE, I don't trust the car on long journeys right now until I get this sorted. So it's unlikely Crying
