How to set ignition timing???
So if the timing is supposed to be set at 5 degrees, I take some chalk and put a mark on the belt at five degrees while the car's off? The start the car and see if the light flashes on the mark? How far should I hold the timing light from the belt? And does this sound right?

How to set ignition timing???
Quote:To set the timing you need to get hold of a timing light and a short
piece of copper wire to jumper (short together) terminals T and E1
in the diagnostic connector. With T and E1 shorted together, the
ignition timing should be set at 10 deg BTDC at idle (800 rpm).

Without T and E1 shorted, the timing will jump to around 26 deg
at idle (10 deg base timing plus advance added by the ECU).

The timing marks are on the bottom timing belt cover, and match to
the notch in the back flange of the crankshaft pulley. If you clean the
cover up and highlight the notch and 10 deg marks with white paint
they will be easier to see.

Some early cars have a round, yellow (I think) diagnostic plug instead
of the square, black diagnostic connector. Two of the pins in the plug
have to be shorted together, but I'm not sure which two Confused

To get your car to idle at 800 rpm it will either have to be warmed
up, or you will have to block off the idle-up bypass port in the throttle
body. Use gaffer tape or a small rubber plug. I think thats about
everything covered Smile

The 10 deg base timing applies to 16V 4AGE with EFI. The timing
marks are down by the crankshaft pulley, so you need to get the
light shining down on the pulley. The mark on the pulley will appear
to be stationary under the strobe, and you see where it lines up
with the scale on the timing cover. Rotate the distributor until the
notch on the pulley is opposite the 10 deg marking.

Very important to bypass the plug on the firewall with a jumper. This affects it greatly!
