I would like to buy Toyota corolla AE86 i choose levin kouki but I have some questions about this car.

1.) I would like to buy car with auto-locking (LSD) differential how I recognize if car have it or no. ( Only some types= which, only some production years which...etc)

2.) Which emission norm AE86 have= registration authorities

3.) Are there any traps or weaknesess which used or badly mainteined AE86 can have...

4.) which version is best ? ( some GT...etc) - only kouki version

well, GT EU versions of that model all have LSD as far as I can remember?

But to check there is a model type on the chassis plate of the rear axle believe its

283 or 285 for an LSD axle (i am doing this by heart so double check the tech section)

But you never know if it has been swapped out. To make your life more eazy. Contact some locals through the forum.

An AE86 are near impossible to find in mint condition so my points is always to do a full service on the engine /oils running gear and then work your way up from there.

I also think alll european models have an LSD
only the sr? models in usa dont have LSD

check for rust on the know points,
pockets in the rear everything underneath
inside the wheelbase
check if the lsd is working
check if the gearbox shifts correct
check if the engine pulls good
check the bearings for play


kouki ae86 have the the thicker half shafts in the back
i think the coupe version is lighter and bit stiffer?

To check for lsd, rev it and let clutch go. If there's 2 black stripes on the ground it has lsd. But i don't know if the owner would let you.

Like robokill said, good maintained ones are difficult to find. They exist but they go crazy money these days.

Also take out the back seat and look for rust under there. Most of them have rot where the seatbelts are attached and on the inside wheelwell.

Except for DJexors hachi which had an open diff from factory for some weird reason.

1.) All EU spec AE86´s should have an LSD, but to be sure jack the rear axle up, turn one wheel by hand, if the other wheel turns in the same direction=LSD if it turns the other way= open

2.)might be better to ask someone from your country, try them?

3.) rust and everything else you whould expect from a almost 30year old car...

4.) very difficult to stay ahead of all the different models, also depends where your car was sold, in Germany the AE86 was sold as 2dr only, named Corolla GT, but as far as I´m aware they´ve never had a Kouki model.... Swiss Ae86´s were 3dr and had an uprated LSD, iirc and so on...
And it get a lot more confusing with japanese modells...

good point but could have been a swapped axle? I couldn't get that thing sideways :-)

I remember we checked the vinplate and it stated it featured an open diff.
