Depending on what 'new front end' defines - maybe he got the front portion from an SR-5, which would explain everything...

Sounds likely. If you grind off the bracket, all the bolt holes for the standard airbox are in place to bolt it up.

Bummer, it is only a couple of spot welds on each side though. I just went carefully and and it only needed a small touch up, with primer and top coat. It is well hidden by the airbox when in place.
