If I remember right it was something like this. VVT is shifting about 15°!?
So with the engine on the stand, I skipped one tooth on the belt (10°) and simulated the othe 5° with an adjustable cam pulley that I have layin around. Then turned the engine by hand.

You may also just skip 2 teeth on the belt. Turn the engine by hand,... If nothing touches you're definately on the safe side!

Thanks man,

to be clear, VVT is working on my car just fine with the kelford cams and I was curious how you tested it. I was told to take off the head and place putty on the piston, or use compressed air in the oil galley that feeds the VVT pulley while turning over, and I like your method as well!

I was asking because I feel that my intake cam could be advanced just a tad to provide better driveability ...but that would make the valve become even closer to the piston when VVT is turned on.

What was damaged on your bottom end?

Rod bearing failure that damaged the crank.
Same thing on 20V engine #2, different block and crank, new bearings,...
