Quaife Steering rack tuning problem
A rally friend of mine bought a quick steering rack from Quaife some months ago . He did not fix the steering rack on his car and meanwhile crashes the ae86 into a (crossing road) wall .
As he was absolutely desesperate , he sold the car . And I bought the steering rack from him .
It's new and in the box , never open !
I fixed the rack into and old but working housing with new bearings .
I had a try on road and find it impossible to drive . Hard points and no steering return in corners .
All tunes have been made as in workshop manuals .
So I try to find why .
Do you ever had same problems ?
I was thinking about the rack guide (part n°:45523-20040) that might be out of shape and could'nt fit with the new main axle?
Sorry for that long post

Regards
Phil

Did you overtighten the preload nut on the backside that puts pressure on the rack gear into the pinion gear? (IE: were you able to turn the pinion gear throughout the range of motion after assembly, but before installing the rack into the car?)

What is your caster set at? P/S or Manual knuckles? What size tires are you running?

Quaife Steering rack tuning problem
Sorry for my late reply , but I also have Computer problems .

I only have manual steering (no P/S) my tyres : Toyo R1R 195/50/15
pressure 2,1kg

I set caster and camber same as it was with stock steering rack .
The preload on pinion was set as in workshop manual (2kg/cm-2in/lb) a very low value. Pinion is turning free and whithout problem when the rack is not in assy .
But it was very hard to set the rack clearance .
I tried to fix clearance as smooth as possible .
But , by moving the rack from left to right , you can" feel the teeth".
I didn't notice that on the stock steering system .

As it's a racing part and a shorter steering demultiplication , it's easy to understand that the steering wheel will be harder to move .
But , when the car was on his wheels, I had a try and , as I said , felt hard point in steering and no steering return .
I think the guide rack could be the reason of my trouble . See the pic added . That part is as old as the complete steering rack and may perhaps be to old for the new well shaped rack.

what do you think ? I must insist , I have no steering problem with the stock parts on car.
regards
Phil

Might as well let someone else have a try ;-) sorry though have no idea what the problem could be. Just let me know when you throw it away and I'll come and fish it out of your dumpsterSmile
You're more likely to find the fault once you start pulling it apart again Dumb question

A wheel to steer the front of the car
A pedal to steer the rear
