RHD -> LHD conversion
LHD 3door levin hatchbacks that are in good condition are pretty much an utopia so I am investigating the possibility of doing a RHD -> LHD conversion.
Haven't really found any good project threads about this so maybe people can fill this up to be a "complete guide". 1 ) The firewall has to be modified or taken from a LHD car, I guess coupe and hatch versions are interchangable. 2) Brake mastercylinder needs to be relocated. 3) heater pipes seem to be in different places, but do you need to relocate them? 4) Can all the steering pieces be swapped over to the other side or do you need to replace parts? 5) how about the electric system? Is there a need to modify the loom? 6) engine and aux, are any of these parts in the way or do they need modification? 7) dash needs to be taken from a LHD or a custom dash made. anything I have overlooked www.pleijerit.net |

RHD -> LHD conversion
I actually believe that with a firewall and steering rack your done. The rest should be the same. Like the heater panel etc its all on the same spot

Problem is that it does not really tell us what parts he changed. All thats known that he used a LHD frontclip and changed the firewall. www.pleijerit.net |

RHD -> LHD conversion
Firewall - is basicly the same on RHD / LHD cars. All you do - is just weld up few holes / cut new holes. I did this - so i know. On the newer Toyota's - you need to change it in WHOLE - but on AE86 - its the same thing.
You will need - whole heater core with blower motor and etc. Dash. Under dash - metal support bar. Heater control - you can use RHD one - but it will be reversed. Wiring - you will need to rework existing RHD wiring to fit under LHD dash / firewall and etc. You will need to extend few wires and etc. As far as i saw - under dash wiring just flips over and its done. Engine wiring will need to be extended. LHD steering gear will be needed. No you CAN NOT use RHD steering gear. The main thing - is that the main subframe - on wich steering gear mounts is different. Actually - the subframe it self is the same - the only difference is mounts for the steering gear - so either you will need to modifie them - or you will need to find LHD subframe. There are few small things to keep in mind like RHD mirrors will not show enouth angle while you will be siting on the Left - so LHD mirrors are needed. Trunk / gas door cables / handle is needed. Light - RHD is not the best thing to use on LHD road Turn signal switch - you will need one from LHD car. Thats all i guess.. goos Wrote:doggy Wrote:LHD steering gear will be needed. No you CAN NOT use RHD steering gear. Steering gear - lol... You need to replace it whole Some people call it steering column, in Usa they call it steering gear... I just hope you know what i mean.. No i dont have any pics of mine, cuz im doing it custom way cuz i will not be using any heater caores and etc. But as im working on RHD to LHD as daily basics - i have lots of pics of conversion on other toyotas, so if you intrested i can link you.
