Red top in the ae86
As many pointed out to be 100% sure some closer investigation would be needed but I'd bet a beer what you have is a big port so going by the silly colour naming scheme a blue one.

The easiest check is to compare the VIN to the engine block number to see if you have an engine swap. The engine block number is on the exhaust side near the flywheel. Also you can not go by 7 ribs. late model 1987 blue tops engines came with 7 ribs.

To be honest I wouldn't know a sane reason why you would try to fit a TVIS on a smallport. The whole purpose of the TVIS is to have the ability to block off one of the two intake runners per cylinder, which increases the airspeed. This allows the engine to be more fuel efficient in low revs. The idea of the smallport is that the engine will have more torque in the lower revs (at the cost of fuel efficiency) while having a higher airspeed at higher revs compared to the bigport. The drawback is that due to the smaller ports the head is now more restricted in the amount of air/fuel mixture you can get into the engine (at high revs). Those two heads are basically meant for very different purposes.
So the idea of fitting a TVIS to a smallport makes as much sense as fitting a TVIS to a 20 valve VTT head.

AE86L-ECMQFW is your model code. The VIN is the number is the one that starts either with JT2AE86... or AE86-0xxxxxx

Your VIN is here, will also be stamped on the plate, but this one is probably easier to read:

When my car came over from Japan, this is the setup I had, which I found strange.

I still find it a strange decision.
The only reason I can come up with is that they simply couldn't get their hands on a RWD converted smallport intake. It does take some skilled welding to convert it.
Did they delete the TVIS butterflies or were they still present? Dumb question

Just to confuse things a bit more........

The 1st gen largeport (1984-1987 **IF** original) is different from a 2nd gen largeport. The most obvious sign would be the front of the head - the casting is different. If you look down at the front of the head you'll either see a small gap between the cams, or not. The gap means a 1st gen head. No gap - 2nd gen head.

If your plan is to build a standard valve head, I'd strongly recommend using a 1st gen head, as the casting is also different at the bowl! The 2nd gen head is better for a big valve head build.

I might be completely wrong but I think it's for the engine mount
