Silvertop Install, Clutch Flywheel problems, please help!!
I installed a Silvetop in my MG midget, previously running a large port 4AGE. I installed the original gearbox and fitted a new clutch kit. The problem is, when you press the clutch pedal and select a gear, then rev the car hard (4-500rpm), the car jumps forward as if the clutch has been released. I have taken the clutch apart and nothing obvious seems to be wrong. I am now concerned that there is movement in the flywheel. If I get a large screwdriver and place it between the block and the flywheel I get slight movement, is this normal?

Thanks

Ivan

did you swap the flywheel ?

bigport flywheel is 200 mm and the 20v silvertop is 212 so you would be missing some grabbing of the clutch

If I remember correctly, there are thrust washers on the crankshaft
to control the forward and back movement. Without reference to the
manual, I can't say the standard clearance. However, it will be quite
small, probably no more than 0.5mm.

When you say the clutch grabs... does it just give a tiny movement,
or does the car actually jump forward by some distance ?? The
release bearing that comes with a FWD clutch kit is completely
wrong for a T50 setup. Did you change the release bearing ?? Did
you install a spigot bearing in the ST flywheel ??

The car would move forward, but it's not like letting the clutch up, if you know what I mean, it wouldn't run you over just sort of bump into you. I took the flywhhel from my 16valve engine, I bought a clutch kit for a RWD corolla. I did fit the spigot bearing (eventually, I forgot if the first time, and was convinced this was the problem). The clucth kit I got wasn't toyota, I noticed differences in the pressure plate springs etc, but overall size was similar, the thrust bearing looked the same.

Thanks

Should be fine then... no different from fitting a clutch kit to
your previous setup. For the car to move forward the clutch
must be getting some sort of contact. Maybe the high rotational
speed when disengaged, causes some small movement of the
pressure plate ? Enough to just kiss the clutch plate ??

Does your clutch take up with the pedal close to the floor, or
not until the pedal is almost at the top of its stroke ?? If it takes
up as soon as the pedal leaves the floor, you most likely have a
problem with your slave cylinder.

I found some small differences between the clutch kits, I have built it back up with the original clutch, going to fit tonight. I will let you know how I get on.

Thanks for the info.
