T50 to AZ6... a "new" option for gearbox issues
dxaqta indeed swap is most effective way to solve such kind of problems. The problem in this particular case is that buying S13/ S14 can be more cost/performance wise Tongue
I already wrote this - the AE86 is a toy. If I can get cheap dogbox from donor car - I will do that. If in process of making dog-box I can strenghten it - I will do that too.

T50 to AZ6... a "new" option for gearbox issues
not agitated here...

Concerning FC or other Mazda gearboxes... I brought this idea to Rob Golden... famous Mazda builder(see link above...)

HE KNOWS MAZDA.... no ands... no ifs... no butts! He says yes, the Miata 6 speed is marginally less strong then an FC box... but you are still absent a gear.... The linkage sucks on the FC(If I'm remembering what Rob said correctly....)
There are only a few 250+hp 4AG powered rwd cars that would benefit from the FC box
where as TONS of 150hp and less 4AGE rwd cars DO exist... they would benefit with a 6th gear

Any 4AGE that is pumping out in excess of 180hp doesn't really need the AZ6, if you have that kind of power, you wouldn't necessarily benefit... with an extra gear.... but for the majority of the 4AGE powered AE86 on the road, we are talking UNDER 150hp... in most cases were talking under 130hp! The AZ6 is an option for these cars

T50 to AZ6... a "new" option for gearbox issues
i see the benfit of running the 6th gear... save u from living with 4600rpm at 110km/h haha.... but i cant justify the expense, for really no performance benefits other then the cruising on the highway, and a slightly stronger box, which can be done using cheaper options Tongue

but yes im interested in this project, wanna see how it goes.... also in regards to the FC box, i heard of someone that HASSLEGREN is making a bell houseing to mount it up to their new FA turbo 16v for the formula d drift series in the US, so this may be another cheaper option....

Oh an putting an sr20 is the best thing into a sprinter Tongue gotta luv the fact u can get 150rwkw and the things isnt even sweating, and it would be cheaper to buy a s13/14 but i luv my coupe Thumbs up!

T50 to AZ6... a "new" option for gearbox issues
Only the FC turbo boxes are stronger..difficult to find and usually in need of a rebuild. The ordinary FC used the same box as the miata did..which by the way is cheap, plentifull and good up to 250rwhp. Also very sweet and positive shifter feel. I'm sure the new six cog item is similar or better.

The swap sounds great, but I'm not sure whether the market for it exists in continental Europe..Its about as expensive as the cars themselves. Prices are still rising though, so it might be a completely different ball game in a year or two.

NoHachi,

The N/A box on the FC usually gets torn to bits on FCs when going above 200hp. Maybe not so on a freshly rebuild box, but from what I've read from people that have actually tuned their FC N/A they've started to run into trouble from 180hp and up. Mazda didn't put the stronger box in the Turbo for nothing you know..

Weird, several hundred of daily driven miata's at over 220whp, trannies last for ever. Switch to T2 tranny is not considered necessary untill hp levels of 250 to 300 rwhp are desired... Maybe the car weight?

Though about the weight myself too.

Talking about weight. What is the weight difference between the AZ6 and the T50? Also, rumors I have seen floating around the net says AZ6 is essentially the same box as Toyotas J160 on the Altezza (and possibly also in Lexus IS200?, RX8, S2000, S15 and on and on...), do you know if any of this is true? If so, are the gear ratios the same?

[quote="robokill"]Cool sticky ? At least once your writeup is complete.

I understand the idea but I have seen a guy running GZE's for years and never having problems. ....... maybe you guys can't shift :-D

I don't see the need of chaning the gearbox on a AE86 I think its great. But maybe your purpose with it is difrent than mine ....

]

Yes, indeed i am running for years 4agze's on t50's, no problemo Respect!
And even one with an old one from a TE71....standed more then 100.000k's. Stil going strong! Now i am daily driving 4agze on T50 wich already ahs 245.000 k's on it, no problemo....So.....

Btw, I use a W58 behind my 3th gen 3sgte in my Hachi, goes great, good ratio..
Would love to try a T50 behind my 3sgte. See how fast I could kill it,
but can't get hold of a bellhousing yet.
Also have a J160 from altezza 3SGE-beams, intresting box, not heavy.
I just looked for the ratio's, have'm some where, thought end was 0.861.
Also the 6 speed supra box, but way to heavy and way to big for your AE86, believe me

Good luck and succes.

Altezza, RX8, Miata..... ALL the same basic box.... I'm pretty sure the S15 uses it too Different ratios... RX8 even uses different ratios then MX5. The adapter would still be needed since "S" and "A" engines have different tranny bolt patterns. Other dream I have (mentioned it in another thread) was a complete 3SG/AZ6 swap into an old Volvo P1800
