TVIS?
I have a Honda EK4 and it kicks much harder than the AE86, so at first I didn't even notice the AE86's kick. I was a little bit dissapointed, when I first drove my ae86. With AE86 I fell small increase at about 5k rpm, so I'm still wondering if should be harder.

In my opinion Honda's engines are much different than 4age, in the way of the distributed power and acceleration. I don't know how to explain, but I'll try:

with Honda B16A2 : more the rpm increase, more you feel the acceleration and if you don't look at the rpm meter, you feel max rpm when you are too high - at the rews limiter.

with 4AGE is different, with high rpm the acceleration is decreasing, so you know when to change gear also without looking at rpm meter...

Is there any other way to tell if tvis works ok? If tvis wasn't working, the engne light will be on?

Regards
Andrej

Dreja,

The power gain on a 4AG should be pretty constant. Thats why you wont feel a sudden power increase or something like that. I don't have this decrease in pull as I come to redline except maybe just above 7000 rpm. But I tent to shift around 6000 rpm with my normal driving only pushing it like that on the circuit.

The TVIS is supposed to open when the torque curves meet (open vs. closed TVIS valve) so you shouldn't experience a sudden increase (or decrease) in torque when the valve opens.

IF and only if the engine hasn't been changed in any ways of course..

Using: -98 Camry 3.0 V6
Abusing : -85 Corolla 2.0 GTi

Dreja,
the Honda kick is VTEC one. That means "instant new aggresive cams". Also don't forget 160hp vs 124 hp - that makes the difference.

Yes, the engines are much different, but at least two things are better in 4age:
- throttle response
- rwd Thumbs up! Hurray!

Why do people always try and compare the 4age with the B16B? Given the 16v 4age's age it would be more fair to compare it to the ZC 1.6 16v engine.

Ivan:
I just wrote my opinion about "tvis kick" as it was earlier asked if it can be compared to Honda's Vtec...

Kristian:
I don't know for others, but I don't know why I could be jelaous. I'm a proud owner of 2 grate cars: EK4 (honda hachback vti with b16a2) and AE86...

I must say that in my country there are a lot of them who are against japanese cars, expecially against Hondas. I don't know why (also they don't know the reason), anyone buys the car which he likes or which he can afford, and there always exists another car which is better or faster than yours - so you don't buy the car (Honda for eg.) to be the best, you just buy it because you like it...
