Tomei 16V poncams + Tomei technical trax 1.5 way LSD
Hi everyone,

Still tinkering with the everlasting project as I assume al 86's are.

I've been reading a lot of good things about the Tomei poncams.
There is one very good article about the 20v version circulating the internet which shows
a gain of 14hp out of the box. I'm looking to buy the Tomei 16V cams and hoping for similar gains.

Does anyone here have actual experience with these cams?
My setup is pretty basic. Stock 16v rebuild 4AGE with TRD metal headgasket, standard intake,
Martelius Group A header and an Exedy light flywheel. Hoping the poncams deliver a little extra
kick.

Secondly looking to buy a good LSD. Again, I found quite a bit about
Tomei Technical Trax 1.5 Way LSD. Not to loud for street use, good quality,...
Does anyone know if these are drop-in for an 1986 model or do I need to change things?
Maybe someone has a different and better suggestion for an LSD.

Last question, looking to buy from TF-works.(http://wwww.tf-works.com)
Anyone bought from them before?

Thanks Dodgy

Hey there!

Tomei poncams aren't actually THAT good. Moto Miwa from Club4AG and Cusco/Fujitsubo marketing guy he has alot of experience with the poncams and the gains vs money spent isn't worth it.

For a 20V, since you lack of good OEM like options the poncams are a good way to improve your engine response a bit more, but on the 16V that would be a huge mistake.... 16V is a RAW engine it needs basically hardcore cams to br dropped in and a new ECU that can handle timing changes and can be managed. Like a MegaSquirt or a better option.

If you look carefully, most of the 16V are fitted with cams and then 20V ITB's or Carbs..... There isn't much more to be done....

Of course i'm only evaluating the money you would spend vs the HP gained on the Tomei poncams vs some TODA cams and some HKS pulleys.

About the LSD, there is much talk on the web, i've read all the threads i think there are online and pretty much 40% of all the information is incorrect or outdated.

First of all, you have the OEM LSD. The OEM LSD will lock and give you a 25% locking ratio.
Then you have the TRD that should give you like 80%.
Then the Kaaz with 90% (the 2 way and you also have a 1.5way)

Then you have the RS200. The RS200 from Cusco is the best LSD available on the market. Will shift from 1.5way to 2way because it has inside both options on the clutch housings.

I would go for a RS200, for me it's the best track option.

As for me, i'm trying a cheaper but smart option, get the OEM LSD some clutches... and improve it to 60% and try it on the tracks =)

I disagree with packs opinion in the need of "Hardcore" cams for some mir jam out of a 16V. The Tomei cams aren't bad but I would look into cams in the 264 range with arround 8-8.5mm lift an look whats available for he besteht price.

I have Moto Miwa on FB, might contact him and ask to share his experience!
From what I've seen poncams are about $5-600? If I gain 15hp by the cams alone I'd be very happy to spend the money. If it would be 10 or even less I might reconsider. It kinda depends on how the car would feel in the entire rpm range, not peak power.

Toda cams and HKS pulley's would be an option but I'm not looking for a very agressive cam. I think about 75% of my driving on the road is between 2000 and 5000 rpm. So I'm really looking for a cam which offers torque and power in this area. Therefore the poncams seemed like a good start Dodgy.

I would like to keep my original ECU and intake. ITB's are great but I just can't be bothered to change the stock look at the moment. I know this greatly affects the gains I will be able to get but just a little more pull would make me happy Wink.

RS200: never heard of it. Will do some research! Thanks.

From what I understood this is exactly what the poncams are Hurray!.
I did find an older topic though which had a link to Catcams (Belgium company so very closeby :cheerSmile

4AGE's need compression... more then they need camshafts!

As to the NEED for BIG camshafts... that is total BULL$HIT... In one of my 4AGEs I'm making well over 135 whp (about 165 @ the crank), a 40+ % power increase on cams that aren't even 8.5mm of lift Huh

In addition... my other 4AGE, the one running stock cams, makes a bit over 120whp HuhHuh

For my 86, I'm looking at exactly this. Was thinking about getting these Tomei Poncams plus a set of high-comp pistons. Seems like I could expect a 15-20hp increase over stock without changing anything else.
