corolla idles way to high HELP PLEASE
i know this is an ae86 forum but i just got a te72 and cant find nothing about. the car runs great and strong runner but it idles way to high probly around 2k and it sounds like its climbing, its gettin to the point to where i can barrely put it in reverse and gears grind. the guy i got it from said he adjusted the idle cause of the cold weather. it was idleing at about 1500 at warm up then drop to about 1k. my gas pedal is pretty stiff, how do i adjust the idle back to where its suppost to be should i loosen up the throttle cable any ideas will help thanks.

Cool TE72 listen. Nearly every Japanese car will idle around 1500-2000 RPM when its cold. (even my Honda Hybrid does this)

If the gas paddle feels stiff or very "heavy" my only encounter with this problem was change the gas paddle cable. It will make the feel of your gas paddle increadibly different. Maybe you can oil it but I'd say if it hasn't been swapped in 30 years give it a gift. (and also your foot Smile

What engine are we talking about, the 2T? Does it have carbs or efi?

Ok, so it´s different.
3 things I suggest to check:

Have you you played with the idle adjusting screw on your carburettor? Does the idle change?
Check the face of the sparkplugs? If its white you got an airleak somewhere in you intake.

Unlink the throttle cable, an try to push in and out on the carbs end, does it move alright or gets stuck (spliced cable)?

Count how many pieces parts links cables levers & points of contact there are between your foot and the butterfly/throttle plate inside the carburetor's bore/
All of these have to operate freely & smoothly, no corrosion dirt smegma, outside & inside the carb and ALL of its throttle & choke linkage, that's where something is hanging up.
Also, the engine speed has nothing at all to do with the trans grinding, that is only because the clutch is not disengaging completely, not RPM!

So what!

Check if blade is returning to zero/closed position when you blip the throttle.
