Valve sound
Hi there

I have bought my hachi two weeks ago. The previous owner told me that he had rebuilt the engine.

I don't dought about it because the engine works preety well.

But this week every morning when i start my engine i hear a noise like valve knocking till the engine gets to its normal temperature. Then the sound stops (maybe there is a sound but not so loud as in the begining)

Is this normal?

Perhaps my engine oil is wrong. I use 15/40 mineral. I have change it 1000 km ago.

The rebuilt took place 40000 km ago. Should i have to adjust my valves?

Tell me your opinion

I've heard of minor 'valveknock' even on engines that have intrusionless geometry immediately after a rebuild, but i'd say 40 000 km is well enough not to consider it a fresh build.... Don't know, waiting for the gurus to say, i guess..

Could you check whether the noise gets louder after you rev the engine and suddenly close the throttle?

Temperature dependent knock noises always make me think of a conrod bearing failure Undecided

No

If the engine comes to its normal temperature the sound dissapears (maybe it is not so loud)

If i rev the engine and suddenly cut the throttle nothing happens. Everything works normal.

Use quality oil filter (genuine Toyota is cheap and good). Change the oil too with some like 10-40 semi-synth. IMHO change the oil and filter immediately.

Try switching from mineral to semi-synth, could make all the difference you need...

I sense con rod bearing caps .......
