What camshafts would be nice?
Hey there,
I'm (re) building my 4a-ge and i want to put some other camshafts in it. but what kind of cams would be good? i'm going to incrase the compression ratio and do some headwork + itb setup. what cams would be good for this one? i know about changing the valve train.. but what duration/lift?... idle and normal street driving kept in mind please thanks in advance '87 levin coupé |

first off, there are soem topics about this you could search and do some reading.
Very important facts: - how much money do you have/want to invest - what work is exactly done (head, bottom end, ecu, itb etc) What do you want ? a screaming high revving engine ? (above 8 k) or a streetable more power 4age below 8k. These things matter to see what is needed to make your wish come true. And last but not least. DIY or pay for it ? Cars: "99 Lexus IS200 "86 AE86 Kouki Panda Levin GT-Apex (restore project) "84 AE86 Zenki Blue Levin (project racer) Motorcycles: "02 Yamaha R1 "02 Honda Hornet S "08 BMW R1200GS |

it will run on blacktop itb's
head: will get some port/polish and valve angle will be changed.. bottom end: get's new bearings, pistonrings and maybe new pistons.. ecu: stand alone (not sure wich one yet..) bottom will also get balanced (up to 10K) so it could run 9k "safe" so that's also the answer for the next thing: revving above 8K.. and it will be a DIY @ a rebuild company (as my uncle is the owner..) 288's for the revs but you may also need a close ratio gearbox and a lower final drive to suit it. To rev above 8k would see an engine starting to make reasonable power 5000rpm+
272's would look to be ideal if you want it to idle and drive at sensible revs. Toyota engines are very nicely balanced out of the factory, personally I would spend that money elsewhere. Lightened flywheel for example. An analogue brain in a digital World |

Go for high lift and medium duration. 272/288 and around 10mm of lift and you'll get a nice round engine. I think catcams have a nice setup for you.
Above 9.5mm of lift you'll have to make way (with a dremmel) for the cam lobes around the shim area, which BTW you should also change for shimless lifters or an underbucket shim conversion. I'm running 296º custom Kent cams with 9.4mm of lift and the power output is 170hp@8100rpm (engine). I've put the rev limiter at 8900rpm. It screams a lot and I don't use it for DD. Only above 5000rpm you start to feel some power. ARP fasteners at the connecting rods is a must have, I think. Good luck with the build! |

I agree with André
Don't forget to puch a nice CR like 12.5:1 le longer the duration you have the more CR you need. SR Team BURN THE RUBER NOT YOUR SOUL! |
