What's The Best Way To Remove Carbon Deposits?
Hi mates,

I've been working in my intake manifold but it is full of hard carbon deposits due to the high mileage (270.000 km).

Especially, the TVIS plates are all messed up with very hard carbon deposits.

What's the best/easiest way to remove it... I had already tried with a powerfull degreaser that i'm using to remove the oil from other parts, but without much sucess with the carbon deposits.

Thanks for your help

+1...carb cleaner, a lot of ellbow grease and a lot of patience.

A wheel to steer the front of the car
A pedal to steer the rear

the short, easy method costs $ or ¥ or £ or €. Take it to your local engine machinist... he'll either hot tank it... or bake it till the deposits fall off. I had my intake tanked...

It's funny, today my mechanic told me the same thing...

I'll do that...

I already used all my elbow grease...

you could "engine vac" it, I've yet to come across a shop around me that has one, but apparently you can hook up your intake (not sure about exhaust ports) but they cycle a cleaner through the top end getting rid of carbon buildup. Only heard about this method, no personal experience. I wonder its effect on all sensors involved, possibility of ending up paying more replacing gummed up 20 year old sensors.

But by the hot tank pic, that looks far cleaner and brand new! Thumbs up!
