With this I can help. Switching the engine to a later 1.8 is useless, it may have a bit more power, but its heavier and a lot less buzzy/revvy then the 1.6l. Then again: you have the later style 1.6l with all the emissions shit so your 1.6 will be different from my old one.
NA tuning a miata can be done, but its one of the hardest engines to do it on. Stock cams are already pretty wild (250-255 I believe) and bottom end is definately very heavy. They are built perfectly for boost though.
I would probably try and snatch a secondhand set from miata.net somewhere. For about 2000E you can buy some uberchargers that are starting to be sold now, or a BEGI 1.6l turbokit. Thats the same money you would spend on a new greddy with IC and timingmods and will put you in the region of 220whp, nothing from this forum (except maybe Skassa) will be able to keep up.
A friend of mine is doing the approx. the same thing to his miata now (the greddy route) and the power is not that impressive with just the stock kit. (about 140whp). The FMII/III equipped cars are crazy though. You can see some close up pics of his greddy kit here:

Thanx NoHachi, but I dont need the 220 PS.
I dont care to have em under my hood, and I dont find if someone could keep up with me.

150 ps are enough for my needs...

The latest generation 1.8 would be a nice choise and if get borred of it I can allways turbo that one with even better results than the 1.6...

Besides that I have access to the GReddy distributor in Cyprus so I guess ifg the GReddy kit is sold 1.500 euro, I can get it for 1.200 e + e-manage not more than 300 plus custom made i/c for about 100 e = 1.600 complete + installation

how about you find a blacktop 4age and instal taht baby. or even better get a f20c from an s2000.. now that would be really sick. or just get an s2000 Big Grin

with the fine-tuned car that miata already is i wouldnt go for some mad turboing, perhaps just help that already great engine to breathe a bit easier, and make it a bit lively with some typical NA mods.. (lighter flywheel, raise comp-ratio, cai, exhaust, maybe cams..) i think you could get into the 140 hp range for sensible money.. the car is light, and with a shorter diff (4.3 is shorter right?) al this will make one hell of a difference. be cool. stay NA.

These are all for 1.8 engines.

S2000 car or engine would be very expensive.

NA tuning also.

All the NA-tuned N1/N2 AE86s from the Btuned AE86 challenge were beaten by 5 or 6 seconds a lap by a fairly normally tuned turbo miata, cheap suspension+FM2 only...this is not comparable to GZE power or such..240hp is at the wheels..about 270 crank. They fly..

Nmwisima...i was just commenting on the price..spend 200E more and you have the bigger turbo/intercooler and standalone of the begi kit. There is a big gap in turbo kits power output..you either have the 90% stock 150hp greddy kit, or the 270hp begi/Fm ones..nothing in between them.

it allways falls down to ones preferances. Gotta ask yourself what do you want from the car and tune accordingly. turboing a car or tuning it NA way are totally different worlds, so it should be an easy decision. i would definately go for an easy NA tuneup, just to make that engine a bit more revy, responsive and torqy.. and concentrate on the suspension. but if you want serious power than you go for turbo.

The GT2854 is a small turbine..full boost at approx. 2500rpm..into boost much earlier: To put that into perspective: its a LOT earlier then the GZE goes into boost and can (but doesn't have to) hit a lot harder (depending on max.boost setting and the way you regulate).
Modern turbo's really aren't that laggy, not half as laggy as a full NA car below 4000rpm..
The greddy is an older style turbo and loses some efficiency..its small enough though to be considered instant response. Whatever rocks your boat, all options are great...except the NA one..

I agree with you NoHachi.

Maybe a custom kit with a ball bearing KKK borg warner (25 not 2Cool and an independent 5th would be nice.

Any idea where I could buy a good exhaust manifold?
