oil catch can/ suspension question
Wow,
finally I got my AE86 going, after working on it every single minute on it for the last year. I run in the engine, had some TPS switch/ignition trouble but it´s now running sweet!!! Amazing little car This I the first time I drove an AE86, (some track action, too) and have a few questions: 1st: I´ve installed a Cusco catch can and use 10W40 syntetic oil. But it keeps filling up very quick. I know that RWD mounted AGE engines have this problem, but I´m talking about 0,7l per 10min of hard driving. Is that normal??? 2nd: I also wasn´t able to drift it properly. There must be something wrong with my suspension. I´m running adjustable shortened strut housings with TRD yelow short stroke shocks and H&R 8kg/mm springs. T3 NRCA´s and adjustable top mounts. stock arb. Weired thing I noticed the front wheels on the left are close to rub the fender and the right side I´ve a gap with like 2cm, fenders are stock. What could be bent or broken? The rears are Koni yellow with non captive 6kg/mm springs. stock arb Problem after a drift, when the car bounces back I´m getting understeer. I´ve drifted other cars before and my drift expirienced co drivers where also suprised with the behavoir... I know I have to much camber (on maximum) could that be the easy solution? Not sure about the wheel alignment, could be off, too. But car drives pritty straight with hands of steering wheel. If you drive around a track without the intesion to drift it shows normal oversteer behavoir... I´m confused Can anybody help, share some expirience? 1979 Toyota Corolla KE35 1983 Toyota Corolla AE86 1985 Toyota Corolla AE86 |

oil catch can/ suspension question
Are you using the standard cam cover with a baffle inside to protect the
vent outlet from direct oil spray ?? Does it collect a lot of oil when highway driving, or only while drifting ?? Largeport 4AGE has a history of dumping a lot of oil out the vent on long, high rpm left hand turns. You could try swapping the vented cover to the right hand side of the engine. Or using two vented covers and two hoses to the catch can. Koni shocks are best for grip driving. They work so well it is hard to break the rear end free. You might need to look at getting some jap "drift" type shocks, that lose traction more easily. Or try putting 40psi plus pressure in your rear tyres Cheers... jondee86 |

Thanks for your input.
Pretty sure I also read one of your old posts to solve the ignition/ tps switch problem. I´ll have to check, but I´m sure there are baffle shields inside. If I drive normal (130km/h) its next to nothing, but when I drive 200km/h for a few minutes it´s a lot! I´ll try your hints with the covers, to see if there is any difference. If that fails, I´ll have to think of an extern oil return pipe. The previous owner was drifting very well with it and the only changes I did were made to the front suspension. I´ll try different tires and less camber and save money for a wheel alignment. 1979 Toyota Corolla KE35 1983 Toyota Corolla AE86 1985 Toyota Corolla AE86 |

Might be a good idea to test your compression to rule out any blow-by issues.

Ok, will check that, too.
catch can operation seems to be normal under my driving conditions, need to make an oil return pipe. 1979 Toyota Corolla KE35 1983 Toyota Corolla AE86 1985 Toyota Corolla AE86 |

200 kph must be near the limiter. You need lower velocity airflow in
the hose to the catch can. You could try using two vented cam covers. Some jap race cars use vents that rise vertically out of the cam covers for 15 cm, and then make a 90 deg bend to head for the catch can. The larger diameter vertical tube reduces air velocity and entrains less oil than the standard cam vent. Cheers... jondee86 |

You diff sitting to one side, adjustable panhard rod would fix that.

He mentioned the front being offset, not the rear wheels.
I think a tape measure could tell you more about that problem FABRICA MI DIEM, PVNC! |

Thanks for your help!
@johndee86 I supose you´re talking about this: http://ll.speedhunters.com/u/f/eagames/N...86-168.jpg I really like the idea of the oil return pipe, like in nomuken´s 7AGE. It solves the problem first place and not consequences. @the others Still got no adjustable panhard rod at the rear, but its "only" 5mm of center. It´s the front, I was thinking its probably just the fender? LCA´s looked ok, tension rods, too... Well, I´ll get a wheel alignment asap and see what it looks like then 1979 Toyota Corolla KE35 1983 Toyota Corolla AE86 1985 Toyota Corolla AE86 |
