I'm having all sorts of trouble fitting a new ring and pinion, basically it centres around the pinion height. I can do the pre-loads and back lash etc. but getting the correct spacer depth is proving to be a nightmare.
I have installed the pinion shaft and bearing without the spacer so that I can minutely adjust the pinion height and I can get a reasonable pattern in the marking compound but my big problem is getting it to turn smoothly. The backlash is correct by the way.
I can only think that running the ring and pinion "dry" with little or no lubrication while setting it up is the problem. Has anyone else had this happen, can anyone help ?

its harder to understand english when someone from UK speaksSmile

if you change the RNP have to check the hight of the spacer- very important. I had about 1,5mm difference and it was very big problem with proper closing it

that can be first thing to check- but besides of it turning the diff without oil is very very hard - stucks on the bearings

The bearings need a light amount of lubrication. Dip a finger in some gear oil and run it around all the races. It should be plenty for setup purposes.

Dry = binds/no turn when preloaded.

An update on this, I think it is sorted but if anyone could confirm that would be great. Basically the ring and pinion are installed, pre-loads done, backlash etc and a passable pattern marked on the teeth.
Is it normal for the ring and pinion to make a slight knocking noise consistent with speed when turned backwards ?
