What's good for a Brakes upgrade?
Guys,
My stock brakes are hardly working anymore.. Can anyone let me know what's a good brakes system to get? Or does anyone have the disc's to buy? I think if I replace my discs I'll be fine with some new brake pads but not sure where to buy though.. anyone with some help? H. Cheated on my いたずらな女の子 and now I can't get enough of her.. |

Hi Heshan,
The cheap oem brembo replacements are fine. Almost all discs are perfectly suited for everyday ae86 use up to 200hp or so. There are no gains to be had by buying expensive discs so don't waste money there. If your brakes hardly work then something in your systems needs an overhaul. My gues its either glazed pads or old fluid. Replace the fluid with a good quality dot5.1. Something that should really be a part of every 86s yearly maintenance scheme. Spend more money here and less on discs! Glazed pads can sometimes be brought back to life with some sanding paper, though usually its easier to just throw in some cheap replacement pads. hey NoHachi...
I put Dot3.1 right now.. you think I can put 5.1 without any repercussions?? So probably I'll get the cheap OEM Brembo replacements.. Mine are totally done and cannot phase them anymore.. and will put some new pads.. Any upgrades for the calipers? Cheated on my いたずらな女の子 and now I can't get enough of her.. |

No problems switching to DOT5.1. Just don't make the mistake of using DOT5! DOT5 is a different type of fluid while DOT5.1 is the best (street)version of the regular stuff.
Calipers shouldn't need an upgrade. Just refresh your brakes for the street and switch to the T3 Wilwood or RX7 setup if you go racing and manage to boil the stock stuff. Until then you're more then fine with what the 86 came with from the factory. Maybe source some mintex fast-road pads for a little bit of an upgrade without severe loss of daily driver capability. My secret tip is:
- Overhaul the calipers - OEM Brembo discs (no fancy shit like drilled, slotted, slotted drilled, whatever) - Hawk HPS+ Pads - Good Fluid 5.1 Works just very good for me. Track, Daily a suitable combination for the budget. |
