max brake disc thickness ae86 caliper+heel and toe question
Usual .5`s with no offense behind either word spoken, as always, take with salt and healthy mindset:

A BMW is far more stable than an AE86 any day of the week, but even so:
What nohachi says, you dont HAVE to go through all the gears, and it takes a LOT of practice to go through them all without A) jolting the car because of constantly changing footpressure on brake pedal, B) potentially getting tailslide C) in either case loosing time.

I can see it being a perfectly valid technique for N2 cars running TRD short ratio boxes and short ratio final gear, though most of the N2 drivers mostly seem to just decide on the fly whether to go through all gears or skip a bunch with a big blip and good clutch control.

I usually go either A) go through the gears or B) skip a bunch.
Test subject is a T50`ed but otherwise standard TA40.
I do heel & toe because:
1) Terrible brakes
2) I don`t want to wear out the clutch by easing it in at too high speeds.
3) It`s good practice.
4) For the luls.
And in around 2 months time of modest driving time (Due to gasoline expenses killing the AE86 fund box) after getting the drivers license I have gotten it to the point where I 98% of the time dont jolt the car with uneven brake-pedal pressure or too eager clutch release.

Explanation to number 2):
Personally I find that if I take the time to double clutch heel & toe down-shift (Which I feel is better for the synchro`s) I can skip a lot of gears without having to be smooth on the clutch (And it seems to me that slipping the clutch wears it out faster) with the added bonus of not unsettling the car, and since speed is dropping while I`m double clutching there is no need for big blip either.
Ofcourse using the clutch more also entails more wear but it just feels downright 10 times more destructive to ""cheap-escape"" it by easing it in, no matter what the case might be in gained time on track, why?

Because if its just a pure track machine that you put on a trailer when done on the track, you can probably get away with some drivetrain abuse without having to deal with the after-effects on your way home since you`ll be in the tow-car instead.

information overload Huh

@NoHachi
i never did heel and toe on the circuit,im praticing it like crazy when i drive in the car.
i dont lock wheels normally but i need to brake more aggresive,im working on it.
i checked the video and sometimes he goes from 4-2 and the next corner from 4-3-2
its like he almost decides on the spot which of the two he uses

@totta Crolla
i did change the pedals so it way easier now Smile

@Rascal21
actually i am driving the car to the circuit on the circuit and back home.

the reason that i row through gears is because that how i learned it at school and how i always did it.it feels really weird not rowing.
Another reason because on small streets you dont always know which gear you will be in for eg rittensport/... etc
you go from 4-3 and then decide if you will make in 3 or go down because for example grint,mud on the road or not being able to go afond? cut corners

its maybe weird to safe but i feel more conformable on small streets driving than on circuits.Because on circuit a drift is a no go but not on streets.

guess i will need to learn both

Project D Wrote:NoHachi, you really think that an AE86 can be driven like an E90 M3 ?!

The guy didn't start out in an M3 guys.. come on. its just the car he happens to be driving in this vid. Never much heel/toe unless its raining, didn't stop him from becoming a professional driver/drifter.

I'm not saying you shouldn't heel/toe. Just that its not needed to be fast on even a professional level.
I do use it myself, because I find it easier to do then perfectly timing my declutch. I stopped rowing through gears and focus on my braking though.
On the street I do the whole row/heel-toe/row/heel-toe thing just to keep me busy and practice. But its not the fastest way round a track, unless you are very good indeed. And even then you can be just as fast without it.

Speaking about hachis and track use i suppose this video and some others of the same kind should be usefull.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2u6MATReQ3M

These guys do use heel-toe for shifting down. I don't know if they are the faster ones, or if they would be faster if they didn't heel-toe.

Some of them are shifting from 4th to 3rd to 2nd. Others go from 4th to 2nd at once with one deep heel.

I don't know what the sequence would be if they were up to 5th gear.

yes its almost like personal preference.
If possible i would like to keep 4-3-2 because thats how i am used to it.
4-2 feels so weird Huh

thanks for the video,i will watch that.

He is fast, but look how the car twitches releases the clutch. I am certain he would be faster if did heel and toe as he could brake even harder.

It does matter how the car is setup. I like the brake balance to be quite aggressive to get the most out of the stock brakes.

Sarcasme is just one of the things I offer Wink
