Hydraulic handbrake with stock rear brakes
Hi,
I installed a hydraulic handbrake (0.625"). I'm using stock rear brakes. I know in general, the OE rear brakes s*ck. But even with my hydraulic handbrake it's hard to get the rear wheels locked. It works on lower friction asphalt. On high friction I can just lock the inner (unloaded) wheel while cornering. Bleeding is OK, since brake pedal feeling is same as before. Is it normal that even with hydro handbrake the rear is difficult to lock? In other words, are the brakes even worse than I thought? |

Hi, can´t complain about the AE86 rear brakes? You´ve done everything right, 0.625 cylinder is perfect for most cars.
I´ve had the same setup for years, and they have always worked excelent, how´s the condition of your discs/ pads, if they are old rusty or really worn that affects the performance of the handbrake. But I´ve also rebuild the calipers a while before I fitted my handbrake, the self adjuster was seized on on side, so they were adjusted uneven and didnt work properly, that might be worth a try? 1979 Toyota Corolla KE35 1983 Toyota Corolla AE86 1985 Toyota Corolla AE86 |

Brake disc and pads are in good condition and well run in. Rebuilding calipers might be a good option as a next trial. Just need to find a rebuild kit. I skipped the rebuild before since I could not get hold of a kit. Need to search harder... Any good address (online)? |

Allways get the kits from Toyota? its like 50€ for a full kit, thb if its the adjuster you wont even need the rebuild kit, jsut take everything apart, make sure it moves freely and put it back together?

Is the pin on the brake pad backing plate lined up with the caliper piston cut outs? If not your not grabbing evenly and it will barely work.
FYI: do this, if you haven't already. http://www.aeu86.org/forum/printthread.php?tid=11078 Andrew |

How have you made the connection to the master cylinder ?
Mine has a tab welded onto the stock handbrake lever with a short rod going to the master cylinder and there is only just enough leverage to lock the wheels and it is not consistent. In my case the standard cable handbrake is better. An analogue brain in a digital World |

Thanks for All replies.
@boedtsie and fax: Thanks for the link I will have a look. I was told toyota ran out of stock. @assassin: yes it's lined up. I also followed the explanation from your link already but no change. @totta: mine is a separate handbrake. No DIY on the original lever. I extended the lever to the Max lengte already. |

Then what brake pads? Those can make a huge difference.
