Brake discs - what mark to use?
Sorry guys, i'm not disagreeing, just putting forward my views and experiences.
Mintex use a compound (in the 1144 series) that suffers from the age old problem with harder pads. They take heat to work, give off alot of dust and they fade rather quickly as they are not extreem use pads. However, in 90% of cases they are perfectly fine, and like i said, i use them on my fiesta which is light and only does 10 lap sprints. In terms of pad technology, things have progressed in terms of CoF, durability and the temp range they can handle. I try to run PF97 pads whenever i can, they are superb. Bite like nothing else from cold, and when hot literally throw you out the windscreeen.....but they do squeel. And the new range of cerametallic pads are great for use on heavy road cars like my subaru, they bite well, dont fade anywhere like the std pads (3 applications and they are gone), dont require complex bedding in and last a very long time. As for discs, i always and only use plain discs, and no fancy brand names....they just arent worth it. Drilled holes are stress risers and cracks tend to propagate from them, they provide no benefit to cooling.....and slotted just make noise and wear pads so fast. The only way drilled discs can work well is if they are cast in from the beginning, not drilled after. |

I have to agree with the cross drilled/slotted discs being a fancy way of selling a product, with no obvious advantage. I have seen new´ish discs with holes that have cracked after only very few miles of hard driving.
Ofcourse a racecar driver would be more concerned on light weight and fast gas disposal rather than lasting pads and discs. I guess My evil Red/Black Panda http://www.bilgalleri.dk/html/gal_visbil.asp?ID=12832 My current JDM AE86 project http://www.bilgalleri.dk/html/gal_visbil.asp?ID=31609 |
