Car died on me today, RIP fuelpump?
Today is the first day in my 2,5 years of owning my ae86 that it has left me stranded on the side of the road. Today I started the car and started driving home (140km drive), I noticed it was bogging a little bit, but thought it might have something to do with the little bit of oil left around the nr 1 and 2 sparkplugs or something. After driving a bit more the problem was getting worse.. in the end I noticed the engine would hardly rev any more and I decided to get off the road while I could still park it in a somewhat convenient spot. After cleaning the cables and the area around the sparkplugs a bit the car would hardly run any more, and eventually not even try. Had to call ANWB (which is a service that helps you if your car brakes down) and after some poking around we got to the conclusion that there is probably no fuel going to the engine.
I wonder when the first spotting of a hachi being towed will come online.

Now on to the problem solving bit: has anyone experienced a dying fuel pump, and how did that feel during driving? I was thinking of checking for fuel pressure at the return line or the feed pipe to the cold start injector...if anyone has suggestions they are more than welcome.

I reckon it's either a dead fuel pump, a clogged fuel line, or a problem with the EFI (never seen that happen before though).

I'm no mechanic but you might be able to pinch the fuel line between your fingers to feel for the pressure... Try it with the ignition on and off and there should be a clear difference.

first off all, check the ground(massa) in the middle off the trunk under the lock and also chech the connector off the fuelpump(also in the trunk)
little rust on connector of ground points and the car will stop

check this first because ae trunks are always a little wet

it could be the fuelpump indeed.

Some friends of mine had this problem several times.
Sounds exactly like your problem.

I've had one ae86 with dead fuel pump.
Dodo also had fuel pump problems. I sold him 200SX fuel pump (works well) and easy swap.
Vlado_kx also had dead pump problems.

I'd say it's common in ae86.

Thanks for the input guys, TE71's suggestion isnt even that weird...my trunk is always a bit wet indeed. We did check if there was power going to the pump, and it did make some noise, but it might do that and not work at the same time...so I'll check.

I bought an RX7 FC fuelpump yesterday, it looks like it hasnt done much work yet so I hope it's going to work okay. It came from a 12B FC so it's not extreme (should have been a turbo pump though for what it cost me, sadly the turbo-II I knew of was no longer at the wreckers...although they do have a mk3 supra now..but someone said 7MGTE pumps are crap). I think the 12B rx7 still has a lot few more horsies than an ae86, and certainly a thirstier engine so this pump will do just fine without putting too much stress on the pressure regulator. Now to figure out how to modify the opening in the boot to get the old one out.

On a different note...I'm not too confident about the quality of my sparkplug cables anymore...one of the plastic bits that goes over the nr.2 cilinder has a broken corner. I dunno if I still have a spare somewhere..so does anyone know prices for new plug leads from toyota/other carparts stores?

Nope, the Turbo-II FC was at a wrecking yard near Wintelre (on a little road called Koemeer). And I bought the fuelpump from Eurorotor in Veldhoven.
Pretty cool place..they had some nice FD's there...and lots of SA and FC RX's as well, but the price was a bit more than I was planning to spend. I might go to Geldrop if they have some interesting cars though..
