bigger engine??
Maybe the 1.8 VVT T-Sport engine currently used in the Lotus Elise can be adapted for a north-south lay out?

It's 200cm3 larger displacement should not pose a problem with max torque level but maybe prove to be just that extra bit of torque the standard unit lacks.

And for top end performance the variable valve train system offers plenty of torque and therefore power in the upper end of the rev range; and this with little or no compromise in low down 'grunt'.

And last but not least it's a Toyota engine which sould suit the 'chauvinists'. Although this and several other Toyota engines feature a Yamaha cylinderhead...

That would amount to an incredible amount of custom work...for an engine that isnt very special anyway. Might as well buy a honda F20/F22 or K20...which are better than the toyota 1.8 in many ways and have a nice 2 liter displacement with more torque to boot (but not ridiculous amounts of it).

The 1.8 is a fine engine..certainly if you can get your hands on a lotus supercharged one..remember reading somewhere that the engine mounts were totally unsuited for a north-south orientation, but have not researched this myself..

From what I've read about it it is a peaky engine, so it might fit the bill for what many ae86 guys want. But I doubt it is cheaper or easier to find than the honda type R engines, and AFAIK there is no RWD gearbox that will mate to the 1.8 (unless there is a similar engine in the altezza series).
For the honda lumps you can atleast use the S2000 gearbox (not saying that it's cheap, but it saves the hassle of making your own bellhousing)..

Supercharged versions are also made by TTE as you probably know.

Also, how is "the 1.8 a fine engine"???
In my eyes -and in the VDC equiped Corolla Tsport) it not so fine...
Lack of power at low rpm's, nothing special and really noisy at middle rpm's and finally power appears too high, from 6.000 to 9.000, probably to high to use in the city and to noisy for national roads.
So is good for what?
Track use? Not with the VDC...

What do you expect from an 1.8l NA engine? It has to be peaky to make that kind of horsepower. It has more torque then a similar 4A-GE, makes more hp then a similar 4A-GE is much lighter then a 4A-GE and infinately more reliable.
Supercharged I'm sure it will make up the torque deficit and reach respectable hp numbers.

At 115kgs it is more then 50kgs lighter then the F20C. HP/kg ratio of 1.65 for the 2ZZ-GE versus 1.5 for the F20C..not too shabby.

I think it is excellent for track use..just looking at some of the elises and exiges running about with the engine has me convinced..they're screamers..

By the way..what is VDC?

Sideways Madness, Talk to Irishtwincam on this site, he has a 4age supercharger kit @ his house for sale, cheaper alternative to the 4agz & you could use the supercharger kit with a late spec 4age, or 4age head with a 1.8 7afe (corolla gxi) bottom end, just to be different. Thats what I was going to do, then I got hold of a mint 20v Blacktop from a BZGr Levin.

Cheapish engine, loads of power, original
& its Toyota!!!
Stop the madness

SC your 1600, build a spare 7a-gze bottom end and swap the head and everything over when your done. Your car will be off the road for less time and you get to have oodles of power to keep you motivated.

We can arrange to have the wiring done while you fit the parts to your engine. 2-3week turnaround.

If you want to buy this kit, then email me.

VCD.... That Toyota Electronic Stability System that kills fun-to-drive factor in the kouki Celica TS / Corolla TS / MR2 and the new Lexus IS250...

It's brobably better than the old 4ag, if thats all you got to compare it with...
It might even fit the Hachi better than the FC....

BUT, are you kidding me? Its crap compared to the S2000 engine, even compared to the 2 litre Vtec Type R is using...

Well, you wouldn't be swapping any of the funkillers like VCD obviously..

Over 50kgs less up front can make a significant difference..thats the real strength of the 2ZZ. Les power, but better turn in, better steering feel etc..
Whether thats worth it depends on your preference, but discarding it as crap is a bit to easy.
