Gearbox change or rebuild?
jezza pm the boffin, my bro, he may have a ford bell housing, then any sierra 1.8 ltr box will fit and take all the power your 16v will give. the other option is the supra box w55 or w58 i cant remember which, just trying to get a box and prop made is the hard bit.
as for pulling the box out, give me 4 axle stands and a jack and ill have it out in 30 mins, clutch in another 10 and back in on the road in less than an hour 30 mins, on my own, its not hard. Its gotta go whoosh or give a whine!!!! |

Gearbox change or rebuild?
If I was to think the problem was only synchros, I would open it and change the synchros along with one or another bad bearing. Synchros are cheap, and the gasket kit too.
I've rebuilt mine with 2 synchros (1st and 2nd gear) and 1 bearing. No more than 150€ were spent (including the 80€ bearing). At that time I wasn't in "Do It Yourself mode" so I spent 150€ in the mechanic. Later I did it myself to a friend's gearbox and mine again, since one of the hub sleeves knocked its teeth off. It is somewhat easy to do if you pay attention to the manual and have a press nearby. No other special tools or skills are necessary. The most expensive things around rebuilding a mildly used gearbox are bearings and mechanic work hours. If you can eliminate this second cost, you'll do it cheap. Good Luck and best regards |

As André said: pay attention to the manual and have a press nearby
I would complete advising you to have some atention with the press, otherway you may have additional labour. The better way to confirm if you're doing right it's every time you come from the press after fitting a bearing, check if you can rotate the input and output shaft by hand. If you can't something it's wrong (maybe to much force used with the press). You have always to be able to rotate the shafts by hand. |

Contact Irishtwincam, he can get WA series bellhousing converters so you can throw in a MK111 supra box, good skills if you break one of them!!!

Hmm part of me is thinking about the possibility of putting in a TRD final gear, would this make acceleration in 2nd gear a little quicker and easier? it could be a way of cutting out using 1st gear in traffic all together, if so.

No its fine to downshift to any gear other than 1st, but it sometimes is a bit crunchy going from 2nd to 3rd and that's only going uphill.

problems with downshifting are usually synchro's gone bad (mostly 3-2 and 2-1 shifts). Clunky upshifting is something else I suspect. I still say that getting a second hand t50 is the best bang for buck solution. You can buy 2 or 3 with some luck before you even get to the price it costs to fix the current one, let alone the effort that goes into rebuilding one.
